Pixel’s app drawer gets quick work app schedule button

In the latest update of Android 16 QPR1, Pixel phones have introduced a subtle yet impactful enhancement: the ability to schedule work applications directly from the app drawer. This new feature streamlines the user experience, allowing for a smoother transition between work and personal time.

Effortless Scheduling

Gone are the days of navigating through complex settings or sifting through menus to locate the scheduling feature, which often resided in Digital Wellbeing or the work profile management page. Now, users can simply toggle a button conveniently located alongside their work apps.

This functionality came to light when a user, unaware of the scheduling option’s existence, stumbled upon it in the app drawer. Their discovery was shared with a screenshot, highlighting the newly added button that simplifies the scheduling process.

For those unfamiliar with Google’s work profile, it serves as a protective barrier, keeping professional applications and data separate from personal use on the same device. Users often juggle various applications such as Slack, Outlook, and Teams for work-related tasks. Previously, at the end of the workday, individuals had to manually pause these applications through the Work tab or navigate to a settings page to disconnect from their professional responsibilities.

With this update, a small schedule icon now resides in the lower right corner of the Work tab within the app drawer. A simple tap on this icon initiates the scheduling process, allowing users to pause all work apps and notifications at their preferred hours.

While this adjustment may not seem revolutionary, it represents a significant improvement in visibility and ease of use. Pixel owners have long had the capability to pause work apps, and some have even created their own work profiles using third-party applications like Shelter. However, the newfound accessibility of this feature transforms it into a more user-friendly experience.

This enhancement exemplifies a quality-of-life improvement that may go unnoticed until experienced firsthand. Once users incorporate this feature into their routine, they may find it difficult to revert to a less streamlined process.
