X is down and Elon Musk says it’s due to a ‘massive cyberattack’

What you need to know

Users of X, formerly known as Twitter, have encountered significant disruptions this morning, with many reporting difficulties accessing in-app features. According to Downdetector, the outage commenced around 5 AM on March 10, and the exact cause remains elusive.

As the morning unfolded, it became evident that the platform was experiencing intermittent outages, with users intermittently regaining access only to be met with further disruptions shortly thereafter. A common error message displayed read, “Something went wrong. Try re-loading.” Nick Sutrich from Android Central shared his experience, noting that he initially suspected a network issue on his end, stating, “I didn’t even get an error, it just never loads sometimes.”

Data from Downdetector indicates that approximately 58% of users in the U.S. and 56% in Canada are still grappling with access issues. The accompanying graph illustrates a series of peaks and valleys, suggesting that the company is actively working to identify and resolve the underlying problem.

At the height of the outage, Downdetector recorded approximately 42,000 reports indicating that the service was inaccessible. In response to the growing concerns, CEO Elon Musk took to the platform to announce that X is currently facing a “massive cyberattack,” which he believes may be the root cause of the disruptions.

“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…” Musk’s post elaborated. Meanwhile, some users in Canada have begun to report a gradual return to normalcy, with the ability to post and interact on the platform once again.

This is a developing story…
