YouTube playback speed is currently broken on Android

A recent glitch in the YouTube app for Android has left users unable to modify the playback speed of videos, a feature many rely on for a tailored viewing experience. As of Tuesday afternoon, attempts to adjust the playback speed beyond the default 1x setting have proven futile. Users navigating to the settings gear and selecting the playback speed options find that their adjustments do not persist; upon closing and reopening the app, the speed reverts to 1x.

This issue appears to affect both the stable version (20.28.39) and the beta version (20.29.39) of the YouTube app. However, it is noteworthy that playback speed controls for podcasts in YouTube Music remain unaffected by this bug.

YouTube has acknowledged the situation, stating, “We’re aware some of you are experiencing issues adjusting playback speed while watching videos on Android devices. Our teams are actively investigating this issue! We’ll update this thread as soon as we have new information.”
