Update on the Horizon for Android Auto Voice Command Glitch
Users of Android Auto have been experiencing a snag with voice commands, where the system was not properly recognizing their preferred navigation apps. Instead, Google Maps was taking the lead, regardless of user settings. This issue has been a thorn in the side of drivers who rely on alternative apps for their navigational needs.
According to 9to5Google, the glitch meant that even when other navigation apps like Waze were in use, voice commands were being rerouted to Google Maps by default. This was happening despite the expectation that Google Assistant should recognize and utilize the app currently in use or the last one accessed by the user.
The workaround for this issue was less than ideal, involving the complete deactivation of Google Maps on the user’s device. This was not a viable solution for many, as Google Maps is often the go-to option for other types of directions, such as walking or locating nearby amenities.
There’s good news on the horizon, however. The latest update, version 15.13.46.28 of the Google app, is reportedly steering Google Assistant back on track. This update is poised to restore the expected functionality, where voice commands are correctly interpreted and sent to the user’s navigation app of choice.
Despite being a part of the Google family, Waze offers unique features that have won over many users, such as advanced driving alerts. The same can be said for other third-party driving apps that support voice commands. The confusion caused by the misdirection of commands mid-journey was far from convenient, but with the impending fix, users can look forward to a smoother, more reliable experience.
