Artists Rally for Protections Against AI Misuse

As the digital age ushers in groundbreaking developments, more than 200 UK-based artists have taken a stand by signing an open international letter that voices their concerns over artificial intelligence and its potential for misuse. Their call to action is aimed at shielding their creative works from being unlawfully copied or manipulated by AI technologies.

In a parallel move, UK legislators are crafting a new legal framework to protect the integrity of artists’ work in the face of advancing AI capabilities. A recent report from these lawmakers advocates for a law that will safeguard artists against AI-generated deepfakes, misappropriation of their work, and unauthorized endorsements.

Amidst these protective efforts, renowned British singer FKA Twigs has embraced AI in a unique way. She disclosed her use of AI to produce a deepfake version of herself—dubbed “AI Twigs”—intended to engage with fans and the media. This innovative approach allows her to dedicate more time to her artistic pursuits while maintaining an active presence in the public eye.

Embracing AI with Caution

While addressing the US Senate Judiciary subcommittee, FKA Twigs shared insights on her application of AI technology. “AI Twigs” is designed to replicate her mannerisms and even speak multiple languages, including French, Korean, and Japanese. Twigs underscored the importance of regulation to prevent the exploitation of artists’ likenesses and voices without their consent.

She emphasized the value of such technology when used ethically, stating, “These and similar technologies are highly valuable tools. This, however, is all under my control and I can grant or refuse consent in a way that is meaningful. What is not acceptable is when my art and my identity can simply be taken by a third party and exploited falsely for their own gain without my consent due to the absence of appropriate legislative control.” Twigs plans to unveil her AI counterpart later this year, leveraging it to expand her social media engagement and manage her online interactions.

The broader capabilities of AI have indeed made waves, with applications ranging from generating complex architectural designs to even posthumously bringing a legendary rapper’s style back into the music scene. As AI continues to evolve, with hints of an even more advanced GPT-5 on the horizon, the discussion around privacy and security becomes increasingly important. The collective voice of artists and the proactive steps by UK lawmakers reflect a growing consensus on the need to balance innovation with ethical use and protection of intellectual property.
