Integration of Gemini with Google Messages
In a move that brings artificial intelligence closer to everyday communication, Google has begun the process of integrating Gemini with Google Messages. This integration, which was announced last month, is now accessible to beta testers, allowing them to engage with Gemini directly through the Google Messages app. The integration promises a seamless experience that mirrors the standalone Gemini app for Android, with the added convenience of not having to switch between apps.
Discovering Gemini within the Google Messages beta is as simple as tapping the Start chat button. According to reports from 9to5Google, Gemini appears at the top of the contacts list, ready for users to accept the terms and start chatting. It’s important to note that while Gemini uses RCS chats, these are not end-to-end encrypted, and Google has the ability to read these chats for the purpose of improving AI services. Users should be aware that their conversations with Gemini may not be private.
For those eager to try out texting with Gemini in Google Messages, there are a few prerequisites. The feature is currently limited to recent Google or Samsung smartphones, including the Google Pixel 6 or newer, Google Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22 or newer, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold models. Additionally, users must be 18 years or older, use a personal Google account, enable RCS chats, and set the English language in supported countries, with French available for Canadian users.
While the beta testing phase is ongoing, there’s no official announcement on when Gemini will be available to all Google Messages users. However, the expansion of beta access suggests that a wider release may be on the horizon.
For those who have access, Gemini in Messages utilizes the Gemini 1.0 Pro model, delivering concise responses tailored for quick RCS chats. Users can interact with Gemini by providing feedback through thumbs-up or thumbs-down reactions and can even take advantage of extensions like Workspace, similar to the web client. This integration positions Google Messages as a potential hub for those who prefer not to use the dedicated Gemini app or replace their Google Assistant.
