Google designers detail the ongoing effort to revamp Fitbit app

Revamping the Fitbit Experience

In the dynamic world of app design, Google’s acquisition of Fitbit has been a catalyst for change, infusing the Fitbit app with a fresh, new look that aligns with Google’s Material You aesthetic. The transformation, a blend of innovation and nostalgia, draws inspiration from the Light and Space art movement that blossomed in California during the late 1960s.

The Fitbit User Experience (UX) team, in a candid conversation featured on the Google Design website, divulged their creative journey. This process, which began two years prior to the acquisition’s completion, was influenced by the ethos of ‘form follows feeling.’ Mat Helme, a Fitbit product and brand design lead, emphasized the importance of personalization and the ‘all about you’ philosophy, which resonates with Google’s vision for Fitbit.

The result is an app that boasts light backgrounds, an array of rich colors, and soothing pastel shades, reflecting the ongoing design synergy between Google and Fitbit. This is evident in recent updates such as the Fitbit Sleep feature’s redesign, which showcases the commitment to a user-centric approach.

Judy Zhao, a leader of the Fitbit visual motion and systems team, highlighted the importance of rounded forms and softer colors in creating an uplifting and compassionate user experience. The design strategy is not just about aesthetics; it’s also about making health and fitness metrics more accessible and understandable. Sarah Wilson, Fitbit UX Design Lead, explained that the goal is to transition from mere data collection to providing insights and actionable information that empower users on their health journey.

The Google Pixel Watch 2, with its circular design, embodies Fitbit’s rounded design preferences and is equipped with the necessary sensors to simplify the presentation of health data. This integration signifies a strategic move for Fitbit, as the Pixel Watch becomes a flagship device that represents the harmonious marriage of Google’s smartwatch capabilities and Fitbit’s health expertise.
