Google wants Gemini to help you respond to emails in Gmail for Android

Google One AI Premium Subscribers to Experience Enhanced Gmail Replies

In a move that signals Google’s continued investment in artificial intelligence, the tech giant is now trialing AI-powered reply suggestions within the Gmail app for Android. This innovative feature, which is currently accessible through developer flags, is designed to streamline email communication by offering three contextually relevant responses to incoming emails.

The discovery of this functionality was shared by Android code connoisseur AssembleDebug, who managed to activate the feature and provided insights to PiunikaWeb. Termed “reply suggestions from Gemini,” this tool leverages Google’s AI to analyze emails and generate suitable replies, ranging from concise acknowledgments to more elaborate sentences.

Engaging with these suggestions is a breeze. Users can simply tap on one of the AI-crafted replies, which will then populate the compose field, ready for editing or immediate dispatch. This not only saves time but also ensures that responses are thoughtful and pertinent.

Google One AI Premium subscribers have already had a taste of Gemini’s capabilities through beta features that assist in composing emails. Additionally, Workspace Labs offers “Help me write,” another AI-driven aid for crafting messages in Gmail. However, the “reply suggestions from Gemini” are distinct, focusing on providing rapid, ready-to-send replies that enhance the efficiency of email correspondence on Android devices.

Google is keen on refining its AI offerings based on user feedback. To this end, the company has included a feedback mechanism for the reply suggestions. Should the AI-generated responses miss the mark, users can indicate this by tapping on a “bad suggestions?” prompt, thereby informing Google of the need for improvements.

While the AI-generated reply suggestions are currently available for testing by those willing to enable developer flags, the timeline for a broader rollout remains under wraps. As Google continues to fine-tune this feature, users can look forward to a more intuitive and responsive email experience in the near future.
