Messenger’s new community chats don’t need to be connected to Facebook groups

Meta Introduces Massive Community Chats on Messenger

Meta has recently unveiled a new feature on Messenger that allows users to create large community chats with up to 5,000 people, even if they are not connected in any way. This new functionality expands on the previous community chats feature launched for Facebook Groups in 2022, providing a platform for real-time conversations outside of specific groups on the social network.

While Meta has not made an official announcement, the company has confirmed the rollout of this new feature to TechCrunch. Community chats will be consolidated in one place within the Messenger app, each with a designated “Home” space where administrators can share updates and announcements.

According to Meta’s Help page, the feature is currently not available to all users or on all platforms. Users included in the rollout will see the option to create a new community in the left menu of their Messenger app on mobile.

Those who create a community will have the ability to manage the chat by removing members, reporting or deleting content, and ultimately controlling the conversation. Members can also invite others to join, allowing communities to expand beyond their initial participants.

However, users should exercise caution when participating in public conversations, as all messages are visible to current and future members. This new feature opens up possibilities for creating chats for schools, organizations, neighborhoods, and other groups with a large number of potential members.

Overall, Meta’s new community chats on Messenger offer a convenient and versatile platform for connecting with a wide range of individuals, providing an alternative to similar features on other messaging apps like WhatsApp.
