Changes to iPlayer Offline Viewing Options

In the evolving world of digital streaming, the BBC’s iPlayer app has been a stalwart companion to users, offering the convenience of downloading content to enjoy without the need for an internet connection. This feature, which mirrors those found on other popular streaming services such as Netflix, Disney Plus, and Prime Video, has been a boon for those on the go.

However, a shift in consumer usage has prompted the BBC to make the “difficult decision” to sunset its iPlayer Downloads app on PCs and Macs by 2024. This move comes as a result of the dwindling number of users coupled with the significant costs associated with maintaining the service.

Impacted Devices by the iPlayer Downloads Closure

Those who frequently use the service on their computers might want to note the following devices that will be affected by the closure:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
  • MacBook Pro
  • MacBook Air
  • MacBooks

Despite this change, viewers will retain the ability to stream both live and on-demand content directly through the iPlayer on the BBC’s website on these devices.

Timeline for the iPlayer Downloads App Shutdown

The BBC has initiated the process of winding down the app, with significant dates already impacting users. From February 2, newcomers to the streaming service were still able to download and install the BBC iPlayer on PC and Macs. However, as of March 11, the ability to download new programmes ceased.

Content that had been downloaded prior to March 11 remained accessible for a time. Yet, as the calendar turns to April 8, a full cessation of the iPlayer app on PCs and Macs will take place, rendering any remaining downloaded content unplayable via the app on these devices.

Continued iPlayer Access on Mobile Devices

Despite these changes, there is a silver lining for mobile users. Smartphones and tablets, including iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and iPads, will remain unaffected by this transition. Users on these devices can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they will continue to have full access to iPlayer’s capabilities, including the cherished option to download shows and films for offline viewing.
