Meta Introduces Communities Feature to Messenger
Meta has quietly started rolling out Communities, a feature that was first introduced to WhatsApp in 2022, to Messenger. This new feature aims to streamline communication for organizations, schools, and other private groups on the messaging platform.
While Meta has not made an official announcement about the launch of Communities on Messenger, the company has confirmed to TechCrunch that users are now able to access this feature. What sets Communities apart is that users do not need to have a linked Facebook Group to engage with others.
Unlike Community Chats, which were added to Messenger two years ago, users do not need to be part of a Facebook Group to create a dedicated space for real-time communication. According to Meta, Messenger users can now establish a dedicated community to connect with individuals who share similar interests.
Unlike WhatsApp, where users need a phone number to invite others to a Community, Messenger Communities are linked to Facebook’s social graph. This means that users can easily invite Facebook friends and friends of friends to join their communities.
Meta emphasizes that Messenger Communities are primarily intended for public conversations. TechCrunch has reported that the feature is being rolled out globally to all users, but availability may vary. Users who do not see Communities in their app yet are advised to be patient as the rollout continues.
