Spline Inc. has secured funding in its latest Series A round, led by Third Point Ventures, with participation from Y Combinator, Gradient Ventures, Firestreak, and angel investors Jorn van Dijk and Guillermo Rauch. The startup has launched Android support, expanding its platform's collaborative capabilities for developers. Redmond has announced the discontinuation of Paint 3D, which will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, with all updates ceasing permanently. Paint 3D was launched in 2017 as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update, featuring 3D modeling capabilities and a user-friendly interface. Despite its initial promise, it struggled to achieve widespread adoption, as many users preferred the original Paint app. Microsoft has also been phasing out other Windows 10-era applications as it transitions to Windows 11. Users with Paint 3D installed will still be able to use it after the November cut-off date, but no updates will be provided.

Paint 3D will be retired and will not be available in the Microsoft Store or receive future updates starting on November 4, 2024. It was launched in 2017 with a focus on 3D modeling and introduced features like layers, transparency effects, and background removal. However, user reception was mixed, leading Microsoft to keep both Paint 3D and the classic Paint app available on Windows 10 and 11. The classic Paint app has since received enhancements, including layers and auto background removal, and recently gained an AI-powered upgrade with the Cocreator feature for Microsoft Copilot users. The 3D functionalities of Paint 3D did not capture a mainstream audience, prompting Microsoft to merge sought-after features into the classic Paint app. Microsoft Paint has been a staple since its launch in 1985 and continues to receive updates, maintaining its relevance despite competition from more advanced software.
