In October 2017, Microsoft introduced the "Fall Creators Update" for Windows 10, which included Paint 3D, an application for creating and manipulating 3D shapes. Initially, Microsoft considered replacing the classic MS Paint with Paint 3D, but user backlash led to the classic app being revitalized and made available in the Microsoft Store with new features. Microsoft announced the deprecation of Paint 3D, set to be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, with users notified via banner messages. Users are encouraged to use the Paint and Photos apps for 2D editing, while the 3D Viewer app will be used for viewing 3D models. The responsibility for creating and editing 3D images will shift to third-party software. The removal of Paint 3D coincides with the discontinuation of Windows Mixed Reality in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 release. Additionally, many applications from Windows 8 and 10 have been eliminated or rebranded in Windows 11, including the replacement of Mail and Calendar apps with Outlook and the rebranding of Groove to "Windows Media Player."

In 2017, Microsoft launched Paint 3D as part of a Windows 10 update, enhancing the original Microsoft Paint from 1985 with features for 2D and 3D image editing and support for layers. Effective November 4, 2024, Paint 3D will no longer be available for download or receive updates, although existing users can still access it. Paint 3D included features for importing and manipulating 3D shapes, while MS Paint has remained simple with minor updates, including Microsoft Copilot+ AI features.
