Microsoft 365 brings the shutters down on legacy protocols

Microsoft will implement default settings in Microsoft 365 starting mid-July 2025 that block legacy authentication protocols as part of its Secure Future Initiative. Legacy authentication methods, including the Remote PowerShell (RPS) protocol for SharePoint and OneDrive, and the FrontPage Remote Procedure Call (RPC) protocol, will be phased out due to their vulnerability to attacks. Additionally, administrator consent will be required for third-party applications seeking access to organizational files and sites, which may disrupt existing workflows. All changes will be applied by default across all Microsoft 365 tenants.

Old tech is getting the boot inside Windows and Microsoft 365

Microsoft is removing obsolete drivers from Windows Update, starting with those that have modern replacements. Older drivers will be allowed to expire, and partners can republish them only with justification. After a six-month grace period for feedback, outdated drivers will be permanently removed if no issues are raised. This cleanup is part of a recurring process to enhance security and streamline drivers for users. In Microsoft 365, outdated authentication protocols will be blocked by default starting in July 2025, requiring administrator approval for third-party app access. The first protocols to be discontinued include outdated browser authentication methods for SharePoint and OneDrive accessed via Remote PowerShell, as well as the FrontPage Remote Procedure Call protocol. Third-party applications will need explicit administrator permission to access files and sites, which may disrupt existing workflows.

Microsoft testing physical-to-cloud PC failover

Rematch launched without crossplay because of ‘unforeseen technical complexities’ and Sloclap is sorry, but it’s a hit on Steam anyway

Sloclap, the developer of the 5v5 soccer game Rematch, acknowledged the absence of crossplay at launch, despite initially indicating it would be available. On March 3, a developer mentioned efforts to include crossplay at launch, but on June 16, it was confirmed that it would not be ready. Sloclap cited unforeseen technical complexities as the reason for the delay and expressed a commitment to enabling crossplay as a top priority. They also stated that they are addressing performance issues such as lag and crashes, which are their highest priority. Future updates will include gameplay improvements, tournament support, leaderboards, and new game modes, although no specific timeline was provided. On its first day, Rematch recorded nearly 93,000 concurrent players on Steam.

The migration was executed in three phases: deploying the hypervisor and DataSync agent, secure data migration and validation, and production cutover with application deployment. Best practices adopted during the process included Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform, CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, comprehensive monitoring with DATADOG and CloudWatch, and enforcement of AWS Backup policies. The modernization resulted in benefits such as improved scalability and performance, flexibility and portability of applications, enhanced security and compliance, efficient data management, reduced operational overhead, and significant cost savings.

Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27881 (Canary Channel)
