Microsoft is removing the Copilot buttons from its Windows 11 applications, including Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Widgets, in favor of a more streamlined interface. The Copilot button in Notepad has been replaced with a "writing tools" menu that retains AI features without the Copilot branding. The Snipping Tool also no longer features the Copilot button during area selection. This change aims to enhance functionality and simplicity in Windows 11 while keeping the underlying AI capabilities available to users. There is speculation about the potential removal of the Copilot button from laptop keyboards and further streamlining of other Windows 11 features.

Samsung is discontinuing its Samsung Messages application and transitioning users to Google Messages by July. Users are encouraged to switch themselves for a smoother transition, with advantages including enhanced AI capabilities, multi-device connectivity, and RCS Messaging. The exact date for the discontinuation has yet to be provided. Users will receive in-app notifications to guide them through the transition, or they can manually download Google Messages and set it as their default SMS app. Samsung Messages will not be available for download on new devices, including the Galaxy S26. Users with Android 12 or 13 will need to manually add the Google Messages icon to their home screen dock after switching. Those with devices released prior to 2022 may experience temporary disruptions in RCS conversations. Messaging support will also cease for older generation smartwatches running Tizen OS, specifically those launched before the Galaxy Watch4.

AI PCs with Neural Processing Units (NPUs) are becoming common in technology, enabling innovative applications that utilize on-device AI. Microsoft's Windows AI APIs facilitate easy integration of AI into applications, requiring only a Copilot+ PC with a capable NPU. Lance McCarthy, a Microsoft MVP, highlights tools available for developers, including Phi Silica for local language modeling, AI Text Recognition for OCR, and AI Imaging tools for image processing. McCarthy's Xkcd Viewer app exemplifies these tools, featuring AI-powered image descriptions for visually impaired users, which enhance the experience beyond simple text readouts. The modification of the app took ten minutes and significantly improved user accessibility.

Samsung will discontinue its Messages app in July 2026, requiring users to switch to Google Messages. After the shutdown, Samsung Messages will only send texts to emergency contacts and services. Users will receive in-app prompts to switch and can easily set Google Messages as the default. Devices running Android 11 or lower will remain unaffected. This follows Samsung's 2024 decision to stop pre-installing its Messages app on flagship Galaxy devices. The transition emphasizes the benefits of Google Messages, including enhanced security, support for Rich Communication Services (RCS), and improved multi-device connectivity.

Microsoft has introduced early access to Copilot Cowork through its Frontier program, enhancing the Researcher feature to improve planning, analysis, and decision-making workflows. Copilot Cowork is an AI system designed to manage complex, multi-step tasks within Microsoft 365, allowing users to set outcomes and receive real-time updates while enabling adjustments as needed. It is based on the Claude Cowork framework by Anthropic. The Researcher tool now includes a Critique feature that uses two AI models, GPT and Claude, to improve response accuracy, resulting in a 13.8% performance boost on the DRACO benchmark. Additionally, the Model Council feature allows users to compare outputs from multiple AI models side by side. These updates are part of Wave 3 of Microsoft 365 Copilot, aiming to make AI a more active participant in work tasks.
