Google is expanding its Gemini Nano AI model by introducing new ML Kit GenAI APIs, expected to be unveiled at the I/O 2025 event. These APIs will allow developers to integrate features such as text summarization, proofreading, rewriting, and image description generation into their applications. Gemini Nano operates on devices, enhancing privacy by processing data locally. The ML Kit GenAI APIs will support various languages and functionalities, including generating concise summaries, correcting grammar, transforming chat messages, and providing image descriptions. Unlike the experimental AI Edge SDK, the GenAI APIs will be in beta, allowing for broader device compatibility beyond the Pixel 9 series, including other Android devices. Public documentation for the ML Kit GenAI APIs is now available for developers.

Manychat has secured million in a Series B funding round led by Summit Partners to expand its operations. The company has approximately 1.5 million customers in 170 countries, including brands like Nike and the New York Times. Manychat facilitates the transmission of billions of messages annually across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Since its inception in 2015, Manychat had raised around million prior to this round, mainly from a million Series A round in 2019. The company operates at a near break-even point and has experienced significant growth, particularly after Facebook opened its Messenger APIs. Manychat's focus on user engagement distinguishes it from many generative AI chatbots. The new funds will be used for research and development to enhance AI capabilities and improve global sales, marketing, and customer support.

Generative AI is changing digital interactions, particularly with AI-driven chatbots like Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT, which may challenge Google's search dominance. Opera has launched Browser Operator, an AI agent that automates routine browsing tasks and operates natively within the browser, protecting user credentials. It understands natural language instructions and pauses for user input during sensitive actions. Opera emphasizes that Browser Operator does not send any user information to its servers and uses a textual representation of web pages for context. The tool can handle cookie prompts and verification dialogs without hindering functionality. Currently in preview mode, Browser Operator will be rolled out widely and can be accessed from Opera's sidebar or Command Line.

HP's acquisition of Humane AI has led to the upcoming launch of Rabbit's Android app, designed as a personal assistant that automates tasks and streamlines daily activities. Unlike traditional AI chatbots, Rabbit's agent can coordinate tasks across various applications, such as sending dinner party invitations via WhatsApp, selecting meals from recipe apps, compiling grocery lists, curating YouTube playlists, and creating revenue plans in Google Docs. The app is not yet widely available but will be downloadable from the Play Store, allowing users to prompt the AI to perform tasks in the background. Rabbit faces competition from other AI tools like OpenAI's Operator and Anthropic's Claude AI, but distinguishes itself by focusing on Android devices and everyday applications. This shift to a software-based model is seen as essential for Rabbit's independence, following the limited success of its standalone R1 device.

Google has introduced the Deep Research tool in its Gemini app for Android users, previously available only on the web. This tool allows Gemini users to generate comprehensive reports quickly, with a gradual rollout for select users. To use it, Gemini Advanced users must select the “1.5 Pro with Deep Research” option, input queries, and customize an outline before generating the report. The report includes sourced references and typically takes five to ten minutes to generate, although complex inquiries may take longer. Users can leave the chat interface and receive a notification when the report is ready. Feedback on the tool has been mixed, with some users noting its strengths in broader topics but weaknesses in specific requests. OpenAI has also launched a similar Deep Research feature, indicating a trend in advanced research tools for mobile applications.

A report from the Mac security firm Moonlock highlights concerns about AI-powered malware, particularly the use of tools like ChatGPT by hackers to create viruses and malicious code. There is ongoing debate among Apple users about the necessity of antivirus software, with some believing it slows down system performance while others advocate for caution. Despite the perception that Macs are largely immune to malware, there has been an increase in malware targeting Macs, including from sophisticated threat actors like North Korean hackers. The emergence of AI chatbots raises concerns that novice hackers could develop sophisticated malware. An example cited is a hacker known as 'barboris', who shared code generated by ChatGPT on a malware forum, demonstrating that individuals with minimal coding experience can use AI for malicious purposes. However, experts like Martin Zugec from Bitdefender suggest that the quality of AI-generated malware is generally low, and the current risk remains relatively low due to built-in safeguards in AI tools. More skilled hackers are likely to rely on their expertise and established resources rather than AI-generated outputs.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed the company's vision for a new generation of AI tools, referred to as "agents," designed to perform tasks for users in professional and personal settings. This shift comes amid skepticism from investors about the viability of advanced AI technologies. Microsoft plans to deploy a range of AI agents, from basic systems to fully autonomous entities, capable of managing tasks like reviewing customer returns and scrutinizing shipping invoices. The Ignite conference highlighted the limitations of current large language models and the industry's push to enhance AI capabilities for more complex tasks. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff criticized Microsoft's approach, calling it a sign of desperation and labeling the rebranding of Copilot as "panic mode," while promoting Salesforce's own AI service, "Agentforce."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is set to share insights on the company's future in artificial intelligence at a gathering in Chicago. Developers are increasingly viewing the next generation of generative AI chatbots as "agents" that can perform various tasks for users, but high development and maintenance costs have raised concerns among investors about the benefits. Microsoft envisions a future where every organization will have a range of AI agents, from basic to fully autonomous systems, capable of tasks like managing customer returns and analyzing shipping invoices. At the Ignite conference, there is a focus on "agentic AI" as users face limitations with current large language models. However, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has criticized Microsoft's rebranding efforts, calling its Copilot service a "flop" due to inaccuracies and data security risks.
