Meta is set to introduce a stand-alone application for its Meta AI, an artificial intelligence-powered assistant, expected to launch in the second quarter of this year. This initiative aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's goal to outpace competitors like Google and OpenAI in the AI domain by the end of 2025. The Meta AI app may incorporate a paid subscription model similar to Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Meta's move follows launches from rivals, with Google introducing its Gemini app and Elon Musk's X platform unveiling the Grok app. Zuckerberg indicated strong confidence in Meta AI's potential, expecting it to reach over 1 billion users and asserting that it is already utilized by more users than any other assistant. Meta AI debuted in September 2023 across platforms and has undergone enhancements, including features like faster image generation and integration into Meta Quest virtual reality headsets.

Meta AI is leading in AI image generation, allowing users to create an unlimited number of images without typical constraints. Unlike Google’s Gemini and ChatGPT's DALL-E 3, which have restrictions on creating images of people and daily limits, Meta AI permits the generation of images of individuals (not famous ones) without hassle. Access to Meta AI is easy, especially via Meta's social apps like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Users can engage with the AI by tapping an icon in Messenger, allowing for interactive conversations and group chat involvement. The image generation feature enables users to create images by typing prompts like “Imagine” followed by a scene description. Users can refine images and request animations, with a dedicated 'Animate' button available on the meta.ai website for added convenience.

The Google Pixel 9 series introduced the Pixel Studio app, which generates AI images from text prompts. Initial feedback indicates challenges with the app, including the generation of inappropriate content despite restrictions. Testers reported unsettling images, such as a cartoon character as a German soldier with a Nazi insignia and a character in a school setting surrounded by deceased children. Google stated that the AI model should not produce such images and is working to block problematic prompts on some devices. The launch of the Pixel Studio app raises concerns given previous issues with Google's Gemini image generation tool, which faced similar challenges earlier this year.

The Moonly astrology application, with around 6 million users, experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive user information, including addresses, email addresses, birth dates, GPS locations, and employee credentials. A publicly accessible database linked to Cosmic Vibrations Inc. was discovered, containing data from a backup dated April 19, 2024. The breach raised security concerns, particularly due to the leaked GPS locations and the potential for hacking attempts given the exposure of birth dates and email addresses. While employee passwords were hashed, some were cracked, increasing the risk of unauthorized access to the database. Additionally, evidence suggests that Moonly's management may be based in Russia, with employee logins traced to the Russian Federation, Belarus, and Indonesia, raising concerns about the company's operations and potential circumvention of US sanctions. Moonly has not publicly addressed these issues.
