Microsoft has announced the rollout of the Windows 11 24H2 update, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, which is now available for all compatible PCs, except those with safeguard holds. The gradual rollout via Windows Update is nearing completion, and eligible users will see an option to download the update in their settings. Automatic updates will apply to Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 (versions 23H2, 22H2, and 21H2) not managed by IT departments. Upgrade blocks are in place for systems with incompatible hardware or software, including certain applications and drivers. Users can check compatibility using the PC Health Check app or Windows 11 specifications. The update introduces new features such as AI-powered capabilities, an energy saver, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, Bluetooth LE audio support, HDR background support, natural language understanding in search, and a revamped Windows Recall feature. The rollout began in May 2024 for enterprise testing and transitioned to general availability in October. It will also be available to eligible PCs running Windows 10 22H2 in late January 2025, with a force-installation for unmanaged systems on Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2. Microsoft provides a guided walkthrough and support document for users during the upgrade process.

Microsoft has unveiled Windows 11, version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, which has been gradually rolling out since May. Initially available to enterprise customers in the Release Preview Channel, it became accessible on Copilot+ PCs by June. This update includes new foundational elements for AI experiences and resets the 24-month support cycle for Home and Pro editions. A non-security preview update from May 2024 is required for users on versions 22H2 and 23H2 to transition to version 24H2. Key features of the update include AI-powered capabilities, HDR background support, an improved Energy Saver, enhanced Bluetooth LE Audio support for hearing aids, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, Sudo for Windows, integration of Rust into the Windows kernel, and improvements in voice clarity, taskbar functionality, File Explorer, and Settings. The new AI features will initially be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs and will be rolled out to a broader audience starting in November. The update also enhances Windows search with natural language comprehension, introduces super-resolution for low-resolution images, and adds generative fill/erase functions in Paint. The Click to Do feature aims to streamline workflows without transmitting data to Microsoft’s servers. The rollout will begin for eligible devices running versions 22H2 and 23H2, with users encouraged to check for updates in Settings. Devices deemed ineligible will be placed on a "safeguard hold" until issues are resolved. Version 24H2 is available through Windows Server Update Services, Windows Update for Business, and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Additionally, the Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 version is introduced for specialized environments, receiving five years of support, while the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 will receive ten years of support. Microsoft will also remove the Cortana, Tips, and WordPad applications as part of the update.

Microsoft and its partners have launched Copilot+ PCs featuring AI-powered capabilities, moving away from Intel's architecture to Qualcomm chips based on Arm designs. However, gaming compatibility poses challenges, as many popular PC games are optimized for Intel's x86 chips. An analysis revealed that out of approximately 1,300 evaluated games, only about half functioned smoothly on the new Arm-powered PCs. Microsoft has acknowledged that some high-demand games may not work on these devices, and Qualcomm stated that their chip architecture is not currently viewed as a gaming platform. The competition between the Qualcomm-Arm alliance and Intel is expected to intensify, with predictions that new Intel chips for Windows AI PCs will gain significant market share due to better compatibility.
