Microsoft has decided to discontinue the COPILOT function in Excel, which was never widely available and was accessible only to Frontier and Insider users since August 2025. The feature allowed users to interact with spreadsheets using natural language for tasks like summarizing text and categorizing feedback, and it could retrieve information from the web. Users will no longer be able to create new formulas using the COPILOT function after September 14, 2026. While the COPILOT function will be discontinued, similar functionalities will still be available through the Copilot side pane, which supports various AI-driven tasks. Microsoft is shifting towards a more unified Copilot experience within its Microsoft 365 suite, indicating a strategic reassessment of its Copilot offerings.

The emergence of virtual assistants in gaming, particularly in agricultural simulation within Minecraft, enhances the gaming experience by providing players with instructions and explanations for farming tasks. A developer named Serranegra has created an AI tool that optimizes farm construction by generating an optimal arrangement of blocks based on player input regarding terrain and desired crops. For example, the AI's solution for sugarcane cultivation increases yield from 54 to 61 units while improving land utilization from 66.7% to 75.3%, representing a 13% efficiency increase. However, the tool's benefits vary by crop, with negligible gains for some, such as cacti and wheat. Serranegra has made the source code of the "optifarm" project publicly available on GitHub for collaboration.

Microsoft is developing a security tool called Project Perception, aimed at helping organizations identify and fix software vulnerabilities using artificial intelligence. Set to launch this month, it will utilize AI models from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic to offer extensive coverage while being cost-effective. The tool features a model router to select the best AI model for specific tasks, optimizing performance and reducing operational costs. Led by Hayete Gallot, Microsoft is shifting towards AI-focused products, recognizing the potential for substantial returns from enterprise investments in AI. Project Perception aims to compete in the AI-driven vulnerability detection market, although its availability may be limited due to concerns about misuse. Microsoft recently addressed around 570 vulnerabilities using an AI tool called MDASH, suggesting a growing role for AI in cybersecurity.

Microsoft is rolling out significant improvements to Windows Search for Insiders in the Experimental channel. The search home screen has been redesigned to eliminate clutter, replacing trending topics and promotional offers with a streamlined list of recent searches. Search results now clearly indicate their source, and promotional content has been removed from web results. Users can customize their experience by disabling web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Improvements in typo tolerance allow common misspellings to yield correct results, and local files and settings are prioritized more effectively. Support for two-character file searches has been introduced, and reliability fixes have been implemented to address crashes and loading issues. These updates are expected to be rolled out to the broader user base in the coming months.

A report by Mozilla, titled "Over The Edge 2.0," reveals that Microsoft is using various tactics to promote its Edge browser, including misleading banners on Bing and pre-pinning Edge on the Windows taskbar. The report indicates that Microsoft hinders users' ability to download or set alternative browsers as default. It also notes that Microsoft's AI tool, Copilot, fails to recognize the default browser when opening links, and data-sharing settings are preselected to ON in regions like the US and India. Despite these efforts, Edge's market share has declined from 13 percent in June 2025 to just over 10 percent, while Mozilla's Firefox has increased from 5.84 percent to 6.44 percent. The Browser Choice Alliance and other browser developers have criticized Microsoft's practices, calling for fair competition.

Microsoft has revised its guidance on Windows updates, urging users to install them within three days due to the rise of AI-driven cyber threats. Jeremy Chapman from Microsoft 365 emphasized the need for timely updates, recommending a maximum deferral period of two days for quality updates. In June, Microsoft patched 206 vulnerabilities, highlighting the importance of these updates to avoid significant risks. AI can help attackers exploit vulnerabilities quickly, making the practice of delaying updates obsolete. Microsoft has also developed an AI tool, MDASH, to identify vulnerabilities in Windows code.

Google has discontinued Pixel Studio, a generative AI tool for creating stickers and editing images on mobile devices, following the rollout of the v2.3 update. Users are now redirected to alternatives within Google's ecosystem, with Gemini positioned as the direct successor to Pixel Studio. Gemini offers cloud-based image generation and excels in understanding natural language prompts. OpenAI's ChatGPT app, featuring the GPT Image 2 model, provides a conversational interface for image generation and accurately renders text within images. Microsoft Designer is designed for creating high-resolution digital assets and combines AI-generated imagery with traditional graphic design tools. Adobe Firefly emphasizes commercial compliance and offers a comprehensive editing suite for professionals. Picsart, while less polished, provides a wealth of features for community-driven photo editing and graphic design.
