Samsung follows LG in killing Smart TV apps that rent out your internet

Security researchers found that several Samsung Smart TV applications, including Pac-Man, were embedding residential proxy SDKs from data brokers like Bright Data. In response, Samsung has banned the inclusion of residential proxy functionality in new app submissions and is working to remove existing apps with such software. The investigation by Norwegian cybersecurity firm Mnemonic revealed that the Bright Data SDK was integrated into various gaming applications, some promoted by Samsung. While Samsung TVs were not automatically sharing internet connections, the SDK could be activated remotely by developers, requiring user consent. Once consent was granted, the proxy service could operate in the background. Many Samsung TV applications were found to download most of their code from remote servers, complicating verification processes. The issue of residential proxy software is not limited to Samsung, as it has also been identified in various Android apps and devices. Following these findings, LG and Google have also taken measures to address the risks associated with residential proxy networks.

Microsoft warns Windows PC users of Russian hackers on hotel WiFi

Microsoft has issued a warning to Windows PC users about Russian hackers targeting individuals using hotel WiFi networks. The campaign, named CaptiveCrunch and attributed to the Storm-2945 group, focuses on corporate travelers and employs tactics like credential theft and malware distribution through compromised guest networks. Microsoft has been monitoring this activity since May, noting its impact on hospitality networks utilizing captive portals. Hackers have been redirecting users to counterfeit sign-in pages to steal credentials without phishing emails. The threat may also extend to Android devices, with hackers using deceptive techniques to manipulate users into downloading malicious APK files. The hackers employ fake verification checks and sign-in prompts, sometimes misleading users into Microsoft's legitimate authentication process to gain access to accounts. Microsoft has identified a specific remote-access trojan named CornFlake, which can record keystrokes, steal credentials, and capture screenshots. Recommendations for travelers include using mobile hotspots, avoiding updates through captive portals, strengthening authentication methods, and blocking unnecessary device-code authentication.

How to Turn Off McAfee

For disabling McAfee WebAdvisor in browsers, users should manage extensions in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. To stop notifications and alerts, users can adjust settings in Windows and various browsers. Uninstalling McAfee involves navigating through the device's settings, and to stop renewal billing, users must log in to their McAfee account and disable auto-renewal. Users should be aware of older and managed-device guides and how to stop notifications on mobile devices. Disabling features does not uninstall McAfee, and turning off auto-renewal does not remove the application from the device.

This warning follows the identification of a global campaign named CaptiveCrunch, linked to Storm-2945, which has been targeting corporate travelers since early May by exploiting compromised guest networks. Attackers are manipulating hospitality networks to facilitate credential theft and malware delivery, using tactics such as redirecting network traffic to counterfeit sign-in pages. The campaign affects both Windows and Android devices and employs techniques that include presenting fake verification checks and software updates. Some victims have been misled into participating in Microsoft’s legitimate device-code authentication process, allowing attackers to gain access to accounts without stealing passwords. Microsoft advises travelers to treat guest networks as untrusted and recommends using mobile hotspots, avoiding updates through captive portals, and enhancing security measures. Malicious tools identified include the Windows remote-access trojan (RAT) named CornFlake, which can steal credentials, record keystrokes, and hijack audio and video capabilities.

Missed Windows 11 Secure Boot? Don’t panic, Microsoft is still pushing it in the coming months

Microsoft reassured Windows 11 and Windows 10 users that their PCs will continue to boot normally and receive updates even if they have not yet received the new Secure Boot 2023 certificates. The rollout of these certificates is expected to continue over the upcoming months. The initial Secure Boot certificate expired on June 24, 2026, and Microsoft has been replacing older 2011 certificates since 2024. The latest update, KB5101650, transitioned Windows 11 to OS builds 26200.8875 and 26100.8875 for versions 25H2 and 24H2, respectively. The 2023 certificates replace older certificates with modern cryptographic standards, allowing Microsoft to deliver DBX revocation updates without interruption. Devices using the 2011 KEK can only receive DBX updates signed with that key, which is no longer valid after June 24. Microsoft has been rolling out the 2023 certificates for the past two years, and many devices remained in a yellow or red status by the June deadline. To check Secure Boot status, users can navigate to Windows Security > Device Security. A green checkmark indicates successful application of the certificates, while yellow and red alerts indicate compatibility issues or firmware incompatibility. PCs that are older or operating in Legacy BIOS mode will not receive the updates. Windows 10 also receives Secure Boot updates, but enrollment in Extended Security Updates (ESU) is required.
