12 years after Xbox One’s ‘all-in-one’ vision, Microsoft will no longer sell films or TV shows

Microsoft has announced the cessation of sales for digital films and television shows on its Xbox and PC platforms, effective July 18. No refunds will be issued for previously purchased content, but customers can still redownload their existing shows and movies through the Movies & TV app. The company no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. This decision marks a departure from its previous strategy of positioning the Xbox One as a multimedia hub. Microsoft is encouraging users to explore third-party streaming services available on the Microsoft Store. Additionally, Microsoft recently announced layoffs affecting over 9,000 employees, and there have been cancellations of several gaming projects and changes in leadership at various studios.

TigerData Launches Tiger Lake, Unifying Postgres and the Lakehouse for Real-Time Intelligence

TigerData has introduced Tiger Lake, an architectural layer that integrates the operational speed of Postgres with the analytical capabilities of lakehouses. This innovation allows for continuous, bidirectional data movement between operational databases and scalable cloud storage systems, eliminating the need for data duplication and complex pipelines. Tiger Lake enables real-time replication of Postgres tables into the lakehouse and synchronization of processed results back into Postgres. It is built into Tiger Postgres and enhanced by TimescaleDB, making it suitable for high-ingest, time-series data management. Tiger Lake is based on open standards, such as Apache Iceberg, allowing flexibility without vendor lock-in. It is currently in public beta, enabling users to stream data between Postgres and Iceberg-backed S3 storage, with future updates planned for enhanced querying and synchronization capabilities.

Beeper’s all-in-one messenger updated with better encryption and paid perks

Beeper is enhancing user experience and security by rolling out new security features to improve chat encryption. The platform is transitioning from using Beeper Cloud for message relaying to direct connections with individual messaging applications, enabling end-to-end encryption across supported platforms. Previously, Beeper provided encryption for select services with a two-step process, but the update allows for more efficient delivery directly to app servers. Beeper is introducing a premium subscription model, Beeper Plus, at .99 per month, which includes features like support for up to three accounts from the same app, message scheduling, incognito mode, voice note transcriptions, custom app icons, and the ability to add up to ten accounts. A second tier, Beeper Plus Plus, is available for .99 per month, removing all account limits. However, Beeper does not support iMessage due to unsuccessful integration attempts, and it has open-sourced its iMessage bridge in December 2023 following its acquisition by Automattic.

The Xbox PC app will soon integrate your various game libraries into one place

Microsoft is transforming the Xbox PC app into a comprehensive gaming hub for players, allowing access to a newly aggregated gaming library for Windows 11 PCs and handheld devices. Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview will gain early access to this feature, which will debut on the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X during the holiday season. Hands-On With the Xbox Ally X, the New Gaming Handheld from Asus and Microsoft

Elon Musk Confirms New ‘XChat’ Messaging Option Rolling Out This Week
