Meta faces court over Android tracking claims

Meta is facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly exploiting vulnerabilities in Android smartphones to track users' private information, linking browsing activity to Instagram and Facebook accounts. The lawsuit claims Meta unlawfully accessed and de-anonymized personal data of millions of Android users to enhance advertising profiling. A US District Court Judge ruled that most privacy-related claims in the lawsuit must proceed, stating that plaintiffs have plausibly alleged a significant intrusion upon their privacy. Meta is accused of exploiting an Android vulnerability to bypass security measures that isolate apps, allowing it to link browsing information to users' accounts. Although Meta has reportedly stopped using this tracking method, it successfully dismissed two claims related to unjust enrichment and the use of modified pixel code. Additionally, the lawsuit includes claims against Google for negligence, with one claim dismissed but another allowed to proceed. In response to regulatory pressures, Meta is introducing new features for parental supervision of teens on its platforms and plans to use AI to detect underage accounts.

Android Adds Intrusion Logging for Sophisticated Spyware Forensics

Google introduced a new opt-in feature for Android users called Intrusion Logging, which enhances the analysis of spyware attacks as part of the Advanced Protection Mode. Developed with Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders, it logs daily device and network activities, including app activity, installations, network connections, file transfers, system certificate modifications, and device lock events. The log data is encrypted and stored securely, accessible only to the device owner. Logs are retained for 12 months and cannot be deleted by users before expiration, though they can be downloaded for offline storage. Intrusion Logging also records network events during Chrome's Incognito mode. This feature is beneficial for high-risk individuals who may be targets of surveillance. Users can access the logs through the Settings app, and the rollout is underway for devices with the Android 16 December update and newer. Additionally, Google announced other privacy and security features, including a verified financial call feature to combat scams, expansion of Live Threat Detection, evaluation of APK files for malware, revocation of accessibility services API access from non-designated apps, and enhancements to Find Hub's Mark as Lost feature. Other updates include improved device recovery options, enhanced privacy controls, introduction of AISeal with pKVM, expansion of Binary Transparency, protection against OTP theft, and strengthening data protection with post-quantum cryptography.

Google brings agentic AI and vibe-coded widgets to Android

Google introduced new AI features under the Gemini Intelligence brand at its Android Show: I/O Edition event. These features allow users to perform tasks across applications, navigate the web, fill out forms, dictate speech, and create personalized Android widgets using natural language. Researchers at ThreatFabric have identified a new variant of the TrickMo banking trojan, named TrickMo.C, targeting Android users in Europe since January 2026. It can log keystrokes, record screens, livestream content, intercept SMS messages, suppress OTP notifications, modify the clipboard, filter notifications, and capture screenshots. The primary targets are in France, Italy, and Austria, allowing unauthorized access to bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. TrickMo.C distinguishes itself by using the TON network for communication, which enhances anonymity and complicates detection efforts.

Google warns 7 million Android users to delete these 28 fake apps

28 Android applications were removed from the Google Play Store after being identified as scams by security researchers at ESET. These apps, part of a campaign called “CallPhantom,” falsely claimed to provide access to private call logs, SMS records, and WhatsApp activity. They attracted millions of downloads despite lacking legitimacy, offering fabricated data such as fake phone numbers and bogus call durations. 28 Android apps delivering bogus information were installed 7 million times from Google Play Store

The CallPhantom apps achieved 7.3 million installations on the Google Play Store but provided users with randomly generated data instead of legitimate information. ESET, part of the App Defense Alliance, discovered the deceptive nature of these apps and reported them to Google, leading to their removal. Some of the 28 identified apps had bypassed the official billing system, complicating refund processes. The investigation began with an app called Call History of Any Number, which falsely claimed to provide call histories for any number, despite being associated with a misleading developer name, Indian gov.in. The apps produced fabricated call histories by generating random phone numbers paired with fixed names and call details. They primarily targeted Android users in India and utilized the widely used UPI payment system. User comments in the Play Store warned others about the fraudulent nature of the service. The apps also employed tactics to lure users into paying for non-existent data, including fake email notifications prompting users to subscribe.
