It’s time for Insiders to update Windows 11 if they want to try the latest clock app and version of the Microsoft Store

Windows 11 Build 27718 has been released to Insiders in the Canary Channel. The update includes an enhanced lock screen experience, new taskbar options, and updates to the Narrator tool. Insiders in both the Canary and Dev Channels can access an improved Microsoft Store with app categories. The Clock app has received updates introducing new widgets. The lock screen now displays media controls when media is playing, and users can drag apps from the Pinned section to the taskbar. The taskbar supports first letter navigation for open or pinned apps. Users can disable suggestions for turning off notifications from specific apps. Minor UI changes have been made to the Windows share window. The Narrator scan mode has improved performance, especially in Microsoft Edge. A notification will prompt users to plug in their laptops when the battery drops to 20% with Energy Saver set to “Always On.” Design improvements have been made to the Windows update dialog. A new section in the Settings menu allows management of touch screen edge gestures. Upcoming security features will protect admin rights with just-in-time privileges, which will be off by default.

Microsoft announces Recall for Windows Insiders, other AI tools in major new Windows 11 release

Microsoft has announced updates for its Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11, emphasizing the integration of AI tools into daily computing. AI will function as a personal assistant, enabling users to find files and images by describing content in their own words. Windows 11 will be available on devices from manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft, powered by Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD processors. New features will be tested by the Windows Insider community before a phased general release in October and November 2024. One feature, Recall, will help users find previously viewed content by capturing screenshots and creating a searchable record, accessible only through Windows Hello for security. Microsoft has implemented measures to filter out sensitive information. Other features include ‘Click to do,’ which suggests task completions, and enhancements to the Photos app for improving image quality. The Windows Search functionality will also be upgraded to locate files based on user descriptions without needing internet connectivity. The Paint app will receive upgrades, including generative fill and erase functionalities, allowing users to create and modify images without a subscription. The upcoming Windows 11 feature upgrade, 24H2, will integrate these AI capabilities and introduce enhancements like Energy Saver mode, Hearing Aid support, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, and interface upgrades.

Employees must download the Outlook app by Tuesday, October 1, when it becomes mandatory for accessing Marquette email. Apple device users should also download and configure Microsoft Authenticator, while Android users need to download and set up the Intune Company Portal before the deadline. The university does not access personal information on devices, such as text messages or browsing history. For Apple devices: Download Outlook and Microsoft Authenticator. For Android devices: Download the Intune Company Portal, then download Outlook from the Company Portal store. Mobile Application Management (MAM) secures specific applications on personal devices accessing university Microsoft 365 apps, while Mobile Device Management (MDM) is used for Marquette-owned devices to secure application data and device settings. Both MDM and MAM are crucial for maintaining the integrity of university data, especially with the risk of loss or theft of mobile devices. MDM allows for more extensive control, including resetting lost devices and viewing device names, while MAM focuses on securing specific applications without managing the device itself.

Microsoft improves Windows 11 Start menu, with no new ads in sight – and there’s a bonus for the lock screen in latest preview

Windows 11 has released a new preview build, 22635 (KB5041876), in the Beta channel, featuring enhancements to the interface. The update includes a revamped category view for the Start > All apps section, which now displays tooltips with app names on hover and has restructured application categories. Additionally, improvements to the lock screen allow users to see media controls while audio is playing, along with a blur effect. Microsoft has refined a feature for notification suggestions, enabling users to disable notifications from unacknowledged apps without affecting the notifications themselves. The update also includes fixes for issues like crashes in File Explorer and the Start menu. Users will have options among the default list, the new category view, and an additional grid view currently in preview.

I never knew I needed this Windows 11 keyboard shortcut until Microsoft started testing it with Insiders

Microsoft has delivered Windows 11 Build 26120.1542 to Insiders in the Dev Channel. The update introduces a new position for the widgets entry point on left-aligned taskbars, now located to the left of the system tray. It also adds a first-letter navigation feature for the taskbar, allowing users to jump to open or pinned applications by pressing a corresponding letter after activating the taskbar with WIN + T. If multiple apps share the same initial letter, pressing the letter multiple times cycles through those applications. The Home and End keys can now be used to navigate directly to the first and last items in the taskbar. Additionally, the update addresses issues with text suggestions for the hardware keyboard, the emoji panel closing unexpectedly, and a bug in the Registry Editor related to saving HEX values when editing DWORD or QWORD.
