Frogblight Malware Targets Android Users With Fake Court and Aid Apps

A new Android-based Trojan named Frogblight is targeting mobile users in Turkiye to steal funds from bank accounts. Identified by Kaspersky's Securelist in August 2025, it spreads through smishing, where scammers send deceptive SMS messages about legal court cases or financial aid. These messages often include links to download malicious applications disguised as legitimate support tools. The malware, which can conceal itself and deactivate on simulated devices or within the U.S., requests extensive permissions to access SMS messages and device storage. Once installed, it opens a legitimate government website to appear credible and injects JavaScript to record keystrokes during banking logins. Recent versions have added keylogging, contact list theft, and private call log collection. The malware has evolved to disguise itself as the Google Chrome browser and other tools, and its source code is available on GitHub, indicating it may be marketed as malware-as-a-service. Kaspersky advises users to avoid downloading APK files from untrusted sources and to scrutinize app permission requests.

Google To Enhance Photo Access And Privacy In Messages App With Android 16 Update

Users can access photos in the Google Messages app on Android by tapping a “plus sign [+]” button, which offers options like Gallery, Camera, GIFs, Stickers, Files, Location, Contacts, and Schedule Send. Selecting the Gallery shows recent images and videos stored locally, but accessing cloud-stored photos requires an additional tap on the Folders button. Google is working on a solution to streamline this process. The custom media picker currently requires access to the full media gallery, raising security concerns. However, with the upcoming Android 16, an embedded photo picker will allow apps to integrate a photo picker directly, showing both cloud-hosted and locally stored media without needing broad permissions. This new feature will enhance user privacy and eliminate the extra step for accessing cloud-hosted content.

Meta Pixel halts Android localhost tracking after disclosure

Security researchers have found that Meta and Yandex used native Android applications to access localhost ports, allowing them to link web browsing data with user identities and bypass privacy protections. Following these findings, Meta stopped its data transmission to localhost and removed much of the tracking code to comply with Google Play policies. A report from researchers at IMDEA Networks, Radboud University, and KU Leuven detailed how apps like Facebook and Instagram collected web cookie data via the loopback interface. This method allowed the companies to associate browsing sessions with user identities, undermining privacy measures. Meta's tracking process involved the Meta Pixel script, which transmitted cookies to native apps through various protocols. Meta began using this technique in September 2024 but ceased these practices by June 3rd, 2025. Yandex's localhost tracking dates back to 2017, and while they did not respond to inquiries, browser vendors have implemented mitigations against these practices. Proposed solutions include a new permission for local network access to prevent such tracking in the future.
