Researchers from Zimperium zLabs have discovered an extortion scheme involving over 250 fraudulent dating applications targeting Android users. These apps request extensive permissions to steal sensitive personal files, threatening victims with the release of their private information unless they comply with extortion demands. Many of the associated domains have been indexed by search engines, making it difficult for users to identify the apps as fraudulent. None of the identified apps were available on the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Users are advised to be cautious when downloading apps from unfamiliar sources, review permissions regularly, and consider installing mobile security solutions.

Playing Minecraft on a Mac is feasible, with two primary editions available: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Java Edition runs natively on macOS and supports mods, while Bedrock Edition lacks official support for Mac and requires workarounds to run. To acquire Minecraft, users can visit minecraft.net, select Java Edition, download the installer, and launch the game. Mods function similarly on Mac as they do on Windows, with popular mod managers like Forge and Fabric supporting macOS. Hosting a Minecraft server on a Mac is possible but cumbersome, leading many to rent servers instead. In Java Edition, players can join IP-based servers and share addresses with friends. Performance can vary, with modern Macs generally handling the game well, but adjustments may be needed for base models. Minecraft Bedrock does not exist natively for Mac, and the Mac App Store version is the Education Edition. Compatibility issues with mods can arise, and local servers may be blocked by the Mac firewall.

A new app called ICEBlock alerts users about nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity by allowing them to report sightings of ICE officers. The app has quickly gained popularity on the Apple App Store and is designed to track location and send push notifications when ICE is reported within a five-mile radius. Users can report sightings anonymously, with reports deleted within four hours, and can only report once every five minutes. The app developer, Joshua Aaron, created it to protect vulnerable communities and insists it is not intended to obstruct law enforcement. Critics, including U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, argue that the app undermines law enforcement and endangers ICE officers. Aaron has faced criticism for not making the app available on Android due to concerns about user anonymity. He emphasizes that the app is legal and protected under the First Amendment.

The Anatsa banking trojan has reappeared on Google Play as a PDF viewer app, accumulating over 50,000 downloads. It activates upon installation, targeting North American banking applications by presenting an overlay that allows unauthorized access, keylogging, and transaction automation. Researchers from Threat Fabric discovered that the app displays a fake notification about banking system maintenance to mask its activities. Anatsa has a history of infiltrating Google Play through various trojanized applications, with previous campaigns resulting in 300,000 downloads in November 2021, 30,000 in June 2023, and 150,000 in February 2024. In May 2024, Zscaler reported two new Anatsa applications on Google Play, achieving 70,000 downloads. The specific app identified is ‘Document Viewer – File Reader,’ published by ‘Hybrid Cars Simulator, Drift & Racing,’ which maintains a “clean” appearance until it builds a user base, after which malicious code is introduced via an update. Anatsa connects to a command-and-control server to monitor targeted applications. Google has removed the malicious app, advising users to uninstall it, scan their devices, and reset banking credentials. Users are encouraged to download apps only from reputable publishers and be cautious with permissions and reviews. Google Play Protect automatically protects users from known malicious apps.

Epic Games has settled its antitrust lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, dismissing allegations of collusion with Google to restrict rival app marketplaces on Android devices. The lawsuit, initiated in September, accused Samsung of working with Google to maintain its market dominance, particularly through Samsung's Auto Blocker feature, which was designed to prevent malicious software but also hindered downloads from competing app stores. The settlement removes Samsung from the broader antitrust case, leaving Google as the sole defendant on remaining claims. Both companies deny wrongdoing, with Google calling the lawsuit "meritless." The settlement comes ahead of Samsung's new Galaxy phone announcements and does not disclose specific terms. Epic's ongoing challenges with its mobile app store highlight the difficulties faced by alternative marketplace operators.
