Google is developing a feature that allows Android users to remotely command and monitor AI workflows on their Macs through the Android Google app. This feature is linked to Gemini Spark, Google's AI agent, and includes a "new thread" system to prevent data leakage. The upgrade aims to create a cross-platform ecosystem for Android users to utilize AI capabilities on Apple-silicon Macs. The feature, internally codenamed "Robin," requires Gemini for macOS to be installed on Apple-silicon devices and allows users to perform tasks like summarizing PDFs or triggering scripts remotely. This functionality is currently exclusive to Mac users, providing them an advantage over Windows users who lack a standalone Gemini desktop client. The Gemini Spark AI framework is still in an experimental stage, and its performance on macOS has yet to be fully validated.

Beginning Thursday, Nationwide customers can conceal payment references on incoming bank transfers within the app. This feature aims to help prevent abusers from using banking systems to maintain unwanted contact and control over survivors. Domestic abuse charities have raised concerns about payment references being used for harassment, with some abusers sending messages or threats through these references. Nationwide's initiative empowers customers to control what is visible in their accounts. Approximately 4.2 million women in the UK have experienced economic abuse, which can include controlling bank accounts and monitoring financial activity. Nationwide's vulnerability support team assisted 312 customers facing abuse in 2025, an increase from 213 the previous year. The organization has also established “safe spaces” in hundreds of branches for domestic abuse support. Campaigners urge other banks to assess how banking features might be exploited by abusers, and Nationwide is considering extending similar functionalities to Virgin Money customers in the future.

Cybersecurity researchers have identified an ad fraud and malvertising operation called Trapdoor, targeting Android users with 455 malicious applications and 183 command-and-control domains. Users often download these disguised apps, which initiate malvertising campaigns and lead to further downloads of malicious applications. At its peak, Trapdoor generated 659 million bid requests daily, with over 24 million downloads of the associated apps, primarily from the United States. The operation exploits install attribution tools to activate malicious activities only for users acquired through fraudulent ad campaigns, while suppressing such behavior for organic downloads. Trapdoor employs advanced evasion techniques, including obfuscation and impersonation of legitimate software, to avoid detection. Google has removed the identified malicious apps from the Play Store in response to the threat.

Instagram has discontinued its end-to-end encryption (e2ee) feature for direct messages, which previously allowed users to communicate securely without interception. All direct messages will now be protected by standard encryption, allowing potential access by service or network providers. Meta, Instagram's parent company, cited low usage rates for this change, which was communicated in March. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about user communications being shared with law enforcement and for AI training purposes, although Meta clarified it does not use private messages for AI purposes. Users seeking privacy can switch to WhatsApp or the standalone Messenger app, which still support e2ee. Meta has also advised users who had e2ee enabled to download their chat histories and media before the feature is fully retired.
