Windows 11 Secure Boot is a messy ride on older PCs, and even Microsoft can’t fix it

Microsoft held an OEM Secure Boot Office Hours event with manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, and HP to discuss issues related to the Windows 11 Secure Boot 2023 certificate rollout. Many IT administrators left with unresolved concerns, particularly regarding Secure Boot certificate errors. Participants reported persistent problems, including failures of suggested solutions from official documentation to apply to their hardware configurations. Ed Tittel shared his experience with compliance issues related to CA-2023 certificates, noting that ASUS motherboards sometimes required Secure Boot to be disabled temporarily, while MSI models exhibited erratic behavior. ASRock systems needed manual key resets, and documentation was lacking. Devices from Dell, HP, and Lenovo performed better but still faced staggered rollouts and required multiple reboots for BIOS updates. Specific issues raised included HP's BitLocker recovery loop persisting even with the latest BIOS, challenges with legacy device support from HP, devices showing Secure Boot Status as Unknown, and failures in updating the KEK on HP EliteBooks. Some questions from IT administrators regarding Dell and HP went unanswered during the session. The experiences highlighted a trend of Secure Boot issues across multiple OEMs, not limited to a single vendor. IT administrators are advised to pilot updates on representative hardware, back up BitLocker recovery keys, and consult OEM-specific advisories. The unresolved issues reflect common challenges faced by users, indicating that problems with Secure Boot certificate deployments are widespread across various manufacturers.

Microsoft cuts OneDrive support for older Windows 10 versions next month

Microsoft will discontinue OneDrive synchronization support for older versions of Windows 10 on August 15, 2026. Users on Windows 10 version 22H2 will continue to receive updates until October 10, 2028. Support for Windows 10 version 21H2 ended on June 13, 2023. Users on versions prior to 22H2 will only be able to access OneDrive through the web interface. Microsoft encourages upgrading to Windows 11 for better functionality. Alternatives like Nextcloud are compatible with Windows 10 version 1809 and later.

Dark patterns in Windows are steering users to Edge: Mozilla-commissioned report

The report indicates that Microsoft hinders users' ability to download or set alternative browsers as default. Despite these efforts, Edge's market share has declined from 13 percent in June 2025 to just over 10 percent, while Mozilla's Firefox has increased from 5.84 percent to 6.44 percent. The Browser Choice Alliance and other browser developers have criticized Microsoft's practices, calling for fair competition.

Your Google Maps App On Android Auto Is About To Look Different

Google has been enhancing Google Maps with features similar to Waze, including road hazard warnings and a visual upgrade called Immersive Navigation, which began rolling out in early 2026. This upgrade was launched for Android Auto users in July 2026, linked to Android Auto version 17.3, but its rollout may be server-side, causing delays for some beta users. Immersive Navigation features a three-dimensional interface with 3D buildings and animated trees, and aims to provide more intuitive directions using images from Google's Street View. Since March 2026, it has been gradually reaching users alongside the updated Ask Maps functionality, which uses AI through Gemini for enhanced navigation assistance. The update's distribution is uneven, with no method to expedite the process. Immersive Navigation utilizes real-time traffic data for better route context, positioning Google Maps favorably against Waze, although Waze still excels in live user feedback on road hazards. There is currently no information on whether Immersive Navigation will support offline maps.

Secure Boot certificate updates are broken on some PCs, Microsoft confirms

Microsoft has acknowledged that several older Secure Boot certificates have expired, necessitating updates for Windows 10 and 11 users. A temporary halt in the issuance of new Secure Boot certificates affects specific PCs, particularly various HP models. Most PCs will receive updates automatically through Windows Update, but some may require a firmware update from the manufacturer. Users may see messages indicating that Secure Boot certificate updates are paused or blocked due to known issues or hardware/firmware limitations. Until manufacturers like HP release necessary firmware updates, users cannot update their Secure Boot certificates. Although the immediate risk from expired certificates is low, it is expected to increase over time. Devices with un-updated Secure Boot certificates will continue to function normally, but they will not receive new security updates, making them vulnerable to emerging threats. Essential features that rely on updated security measures may cease to function correctly as new security challenges arise.
