Microsoft is rolling out a hands-free feature for its Copilot Voice application on Windows 11, allowing users to start conversations by saying “Hey Copilot!” Beta testers, known as Windows Insiders, can activate this feature within the updated app. Users need to enable the feature to respond to the wake word, and the rollout is gradual, with availability to testers worldwide who have set their display language to English. Eligibility requires the Copilot app version to be 1.25051.10.0 or higher. Once activated, a microphone icon will appear, and the feature uses an on-device wake word spotter with a 10-second audio buffer, ensuring audio clips are not sent to the cloud or stored locally. Full functionality requires online access for cloud processing.

Microsoft has integrated the Copilot AI assistant into the Microsoft Store, enhancing the shopping experience for apps and games. Users can access the Copilot feature via a dedicated button on product pages, which presents suggested queries related to the product. When a query is selected, users can interact with a chat interface to receive responses and ask additional questions. The responses are primarily based on information from the product listing page. This feature will be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks, and it cannot be disabled.

Microsoft has added an "Ask Copilot" option to the context menu in Windows 11 as part of update 1.25044.93.0, allowing users to right-click on a file and send it to Copilot for insights. Users have expressed dissatisfaction with this addition, citing an already crowded context menu, and some have found ways to remove the feature via a registry edit. The feature aims to boost the usage of Copilot, which has reportedly plateaued, by keeping it visible to users.

Microsoft's commitment to artificial intelligence and its Copilot initiative is ongoing, with a focus on AI at the upcoming Microsoft Build developer conference from May 19 to 22. The conference will highlight AI, which has become a central theme in recent years. CEO Satya Nadella and CTO Kevin Scott will host the opening keynote, available for viewing on the Build website, with real-time updates provided by Engadget. This year, discussions are expected to include the integration of AI agents into the Windows 11 Settings app, enhancements to File Explorer for easier file management, and upgrades to the start menu for app discovery. A notable feature for Copilot, called Copilot Vision, will allow the AI assistant to observe user activities and engage in relevant dialogue, with an expanded version teased for desktop environments. In March 2025, Microsoft introduced a "Researcher" tool within Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscribers, enabling research aggregation from various sources. There has been no announcement regarding its availability for free users, but potential plans may be revealed at Build 2025. Additionally, updates on Azure, .NET, and GitHub will be part of the conference agenda.
