Emergency Windows 11 Updates Fix Shutdown And Remote Desktop Failures

Microsoft released two emergency out-of-band updates, KB5077744 and KB5077797, to address critical issues with Windows 11 following the January 2026 security updates. Users experienced problems with system shutdowns, hibernation failures, and Remote Desktop authentication issues. The updates target Windows 11 version 23H2 with Secure Launch enabled and also affect Windows 11 version 25H2, Windows 10 22H2 ESU, and Windows Server 2025. The updates are being distributed automatically via Windows Update, but manual intervention may be needed for devices with paused updates or managed through enterprise policies. Microsoft recommends affected users install the updates promptly to restore normal functionality.

Microsoft fixes Windows 11 24H2 updates failing with 0x80240069 error

Microsoft resolved an issue affecting the delivery of the August 2025 Windows 11 24H2 cumulative update (KB5063878) via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), which resulted in error code 0x80240069 during installation. This problem was acknowledged by Microsoft after reports from Windows administrators about the update service terminating unexpectedly. The company indicated that the issue primarily impacts enterprise environments using WSUS, while home users are unlikely to experience it. An automatic solution through Known Issue Rollback (KIR) has been initiated for affected enterprise-managed devices, requiring administrators to install the KIR Group Policy and restart the devices. Users can also manually install the update through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Similar issues had been reported previously, with a comparable problem addressed in May for Windows 11 22H2/23H2 systems.

Windows 11 24H2 update is now automatically downloading on some PCs

Many users of Windows 11 will receive an automatic upgrade to version 24H2, confirmed by Microsoft. Devices running the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 (versions 23H2, 22H2, and 21H2) will receive this update without IT management intervention. The rollout began recently and will extend to users of Windows 10 and 11, unless hindered by compatibility issues. Users can manually check for the update through Settings > Windows Update. As of April, Windows 11's market share was 43.72%, compared to 52.94% for Windows 10, with the end of support for Windows 10 set for October 14, 2025. Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to Windows 11 through ads and popups.
