Device encryption can lead to being locked out of a computer, making it crucial to back up the recovery key in advance. Users with local accounts must ensure they have this key, while those with Microsoft accounts can retrieve it later. Windows 10 and 11 Home editions may automatically encrypt the hard drive. To access the recovery key, users should sign in to their Microsoft account online and note the key ID and recovery key. Multiple devices linked to the same account will be listed online, complicating key retrieval. Each encrypted partition requires a separate recovery key. The OSV refers to the system drive, and FDV refers to other data drives. Without a Microsoft account, users cannot access an online backup of the recovery key, and the Home Edition lacks options for saving the key compared to the Pro version.

How to make sure your Android phone is secure

Android devices have various features to enhance security and privacy. Theft protection features, such as Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock, can be activated in Settings > Google > Personal & device safety.

Windows may finally take no for an answer, adding a permanent opt-out for OneDrive backup nags

Microsoft has introduced a new feature in Windows 11 that allows users to permanently opt out of prompts encouraging them to back up files with OneDrive. The updated full-screen backup prompt now includes an "Opt out of backup" button, which was observed on PCs running stable Windows 11 25H2 builds without the OneDrive sync client installed. This option enables users to indicate their preference against OneDrive integration without uninstalling OneDrive or affecting existing files and synchronization settings. The feature aims to eliminate intrusive backup notifications that previously required users to either continue with OneDrive backup or postpone the prompt. Although the option appeared on at least one system in 2025, it is now being rolled out to a broader range of stable installations. The August 27 update notes from Microsoft do not mention this new opt-out button, suggesting it may be rolling out independently.
