Japanese authorities just dropped a Minecraft map based on actual submarine topographic data, and it lets you explore the seabed from Tokyo Bay to the Mariana Trench

The Japan Coast Guard released a Minecraft map showcasing the submarine topography around Japan's coastline on May 12, coinciding with "Japan Coast Guard Day." The map is available for free download in Java and Bedrock formats and allows players to explore an artistically rendered version of Japan's underwater geography. Players start near Tokyo Bay and can encounter the Seven Islands of Izu and the Iwojima ridge, which includes active volcanoes. The map also features the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench, which the Japan Coast Guard first measured. The map can be accessed through the Japan Coast Guard's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department website, and it includes a tool for looking up block coordinates. The initiative follows a similar project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 2025, which created a Minecraft representation of the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel.

Minecraft Java Edition will finally let you party up with your pals, without the need for mods

The Java Edition of Minecraft is introducing new social features, including a friends list system and peer-to-peer connectivity, directly into the game. The Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 7 update allows players to open private worlds to friends through a 'Multiplayer Options' menu, enabling invitations and access requests. The friends list can be accessed from the title screen and pause menu. These features are exclusive to the Java Edition, and while they may reduce the need for the Essential Mod, some players may continue to use it due to the early stages of the new connectivity features. Access to these updates is currently limited to the Minecraft Snapshot preview system.

Minecraft’s powerful new mob just arrived in Java, and I can’t wait to see what players build

The Sulfur Cube can absorb nearby dropped blocks and transform into a 'ball-like' entity, with nine distinct behavior archetypes affecting movement dynamics. Mojang has also adjusted the behavior of Beds and Slime Blocks upon collision, allowing Slime Blocks to bounce mobs indefinitely. The update transitions from OpenGL rendering to Vulkan for improved performance, while OpenGL remains available for older hardware. The Minecraft 1.26.2 snapshot is live, with a full release expected around June.
