Android Auto to gain video playback, games, web browsing

New functionality is coming to Android Auto, including video playback and web browsing, but these features will only be accessible when the car is parked. Video playback will only work on supported apps and compatible cars, and the user's phone needs to be running Android 16. Game play support is available for beta testers, but it is unclear when these features will be available to the general public. Vehicles with Android Automotive OS already have access to video playback, with audio-only playback while driving coming soon. Google Gemini, a voice-activated AI search assistant, will replace Google Assistant in the coming months. Weather apps are now approved for Android Auto.

Metroidvania game Bolt & Wahlington announced for PC

La Quimera, the new shooter from former 4A Games Ukraine studio Reburn, will be out later this month

La Quimera, a sci-fi shooter from Reburn, will launch on April 25. A closed beta test will take place on April 12 from 7 am PT/10 am ET for 24 hours. The game is set in a fictional Latin American megalopolis called Nuevo Caracas, featuring a narrative about a private military company involved in conflicts with rival factions and corporations. Android 16 Beta 2.1 gives us a sneak peek at Live Updates

Android 16 Beta 2.1 introduces Live Updates for Google Maps, allowing users to monitor navigation progress via the status bar, notification panel, and lock screen. This feature is not fully operational, as it appears collapsed on the always-on display. The update also addresses bugs, including one that caused Pixel phones to restart unexpectedly. Live Updates provide time-sensitive notifications similar to iPhone's Live Activities, showing information like rideshare status and journey progress. Currently, these updates are visible in select areas, but support for the always-on display is incomplete. The status bar displays a minimalistic notification indicating the time remaining until arrival, while more detailed information is available on the lock screen and notification panel.

There’s a new way to play PlayStation and PC games early

Sony has launched the PlayStation Beta Program, allowing PlayStation and PC gamers to express interest in participating in beta tests for new or unreleased titles and features. Registration is open and free for users with a valid PlayStation Network Account in the 73 countries where the network operates. Participation is by invitation only, and participants must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to maintain confidentiality. Earlier this year, there was high demand for access codes to the Elden Ring: Nightreign network test, with some codes selling for hundreds of pounds. Additionally, Sony offered five extra days of PSN membership to users affected by a 24-hour outage of the PlayStation Network.
