Your BitLocker-secured Windows PC isn’t so secure after all – unless you do this

The Guam case is the first known instance of Microsoft providing encryption keys to law enforcement, contrasting with a previous request from the FBI in 2013 that was declined. Users can choose to store their keys locally or in Microsoft's cloud, but storing them in the cloud carries risks of unauthorized access. For optimal security, it is recommended to save the recovery key on a USB stick or external drive, encrypting the file if necessary, and avoiding cloud storage. Users should check their BitLocker settings in Windows 11 or 10 to manage their recovery keys and consider removing any keys stored in the cloud.

Windows security update triggers BitLocker recovery in some systems — bug mostly impacts Intel PCs with Modern Standby support

Microsoft has issued a service alert regarding the October 2025 Windows security update, warning that it may trigger BitLocker recovery on certain systems, specifically those running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows 10 version 22H2. Affected devices may boot into the BitLocker recovery screen after installing updates released on or after October 14, 2025, requiring users to enter their recovery key. Similar issues have occurred in previous updates in May 2023, 2024, and 2022. Users should verify if BitLocker is enabled and retrieve their recovery key from their Microsoft account if needed. BitLocker is a security feature that protects data but can complicate access to local accounts if activated unexpectedly.

Microsoft Confirms New Update Locks Windows 10 — Or Worse. Here’s What To Do

Windows 10 users are facing issues due to the mandatory KB5058379 update, which has caused some PCs to boot into Windows Recovery mode and prompted the need for a BitLocker key. Some users have also experienced a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The update primarily affects devices with Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) using 10th generation or later Intel vPro processors, particularly on Windows 10 versions 22H2 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021. Microsoft is working on a resolution and plans to release an Out-of-band update soon. Affected users are advised to disable Intel TXT in the BIOS to complete the update successfully and avoid further issues. Windows 11 is not impacted by this problem.
