By November 2025, Windows 11 held 53.7 percent of the Windows desktop market, while Windows 10 had 42.7 percent. Statcounter's data is based on a sample of around 1.5 million websites. Many consumers have devices incompatible with upgrades or prefer not to change functioning systems. In the EU, consumers benefit from free Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESU). Businesses face slow change management processes due to poor planning and resource challenges. Organizations use ESUs to maintain security during transitions, but costs can be burdensome for unprepared businesses. Consumers often retain older Windows 10 machines for secondary tasks, affecting usage statistics. Organizations strategically leverage ESUs for mission-critical systems and budget constraints. The cost of ESUs is often less than the potential disruptions from migration. Windows 11 lacks compelling features to prompt enterprises to upgrade, and adoption is slower than previous operating systems, lagging by 10-12 points according to Dell's COO.

Browsing without essential utilities like VPNs and antivirus software can be risky. Not all security applications are equally effective; some, like Bitdefender and ESET, offer superior performance, while others may overwhelm users with alerts or upsell subscriptions. Effective security applications prioritize functionality and provide tools such as firewalls, password managers, VPNs, and virus scans. ESET is recognized for its robust protection against sophisticated cyber threats and is suitable for advanced users, small businesses, and remote workers, earning the 2025 Editor's Choice Award for Best Antivirus for Advanced Users. Avira is a budget-friendly option with a free version that offers essential malware protection and an ad-blocker, named the best antivirus for ad-blocking in 2025 by Techradar. Surfshark, primarily a VPN service, offers antivirus protection and breach alerts through its Surfshark One subscription, recognized as the 2025 Best Value Antivirus. AVG provides comprehensive security features with a lightweight presence and was awarded the 2025 Editor's Choice for Best Performance and Speed Antivirus. Bitdefender is consistently ranked among the top choices for comprehensive protection, recognized as the best overall antivirus of 2025 by multiple publications, offering various paid packages and an Autopilot function. The applications mentioned were selected based on positive endorsements from reputable tech and security publications.

The author's father struggled to open a PDF on his HONOR phone, despite the device's native office suite supporting PDF files. He downloaded multiple misleading PDF apps from the Play Store, which did not resolve the issue. Eventually, he received a deceptive alert suggesting he update his PDF application, which led him to download yet another app. The problem was resolved when the author advised him to uninstall WPS Office, eliminating the misleading alerts and allowing PDFs to open correctly. A report from Malwarebytes indicated that only 15% of users feel confident identifying scams, highlighting the challenges users face in navigating the Android ecosystem. The Google Play Store has been criticized for hosting low-quality apps and deceptive ads, with a report from Zscaler noting the presence of hundreds of malicious apps. The author emphasizes the need for stricter advertising practices and better management of preinstalled apps to protect less tech-savvy users.

A new endpoint detection and response (EDR) evasion technique called SilentButDeadly has been identified, which exploits vulnerabilities in security software by using a network communication blocker that leverages the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). This technique disrupts EDR and antivirus solutions' cloud connectivity without terminating processes or manipulating the kernel. SilentButDeadly operates through a seven-phase execution sequence, starting with verifying administrator privileges and discovering EDR solutions like SentinelOne and Windows Defender. It establishes dynamic WFP sessions with high-priority filtering rules to block outbound telemetry and inbound command-and-control communications, preventing EDR solutions from receiving updates and executing remote management commands. Additionally, it attempts to disable EDR services, hindering automatic restarts and background monitoring. This technique highlights a significant architectural vulnerability in EDR systems that rely on network connectivity. To mitigate this threat, security teams can monitor Windows event logs for specific Event IDs related to WFP filter creation and implement real-time monitoring and redundant communication channels. SilentButDeadly requires administrator privileges and is ineffective against EDR solutions protected by kernel-level network drivers.
