A bug in Windows 11's August update is causing issues with certain solid-state drives (SSDs), particularly those using Phison controllers, which may be more susceptible to the bug. Phison has spent over 4,500 hours testing potentially impacted drives and conducted more than 2,200 test cycles without reproducing the issue. Neither Phison's partners nor customers have reported experiencing the glitch. A false document claiming to list affected Phison controllers was debunked by the company. Microsoft is still investigating the bug, and while SSD malfunctions seem infrequent, the situation remains uncertain. Phison advises users of high-performance storage devices to use heatsinks or thermal pads to prevent overheating during demanding tasks, although this advice is not directly related to the Windows 11 bug.

This week's update introduces a new Minecraft Server Management Protocol that allows real-time queries of player activity, adjustments to game rules, and updates to server settings. Several server properties have been transitioned into game rules, enabling modifications while the server is operational. Players can now use player icons in chat, and the copper golem has received enhancements along with various bug fixes. New features include support for the Halychian language. Changes to recipes now require Hanging Signs to be crafted exclusively with Iron Chains. The server list requires manual entry for new server names, and enhanced text input functionality allows text selection via mouse dragging. UI components will change the mouse cursor shape for better interaction, with a hand-shaped cursor for clickable text labels. Minor tweaks include adjustments to the hitbox of Copper Golems, which is now 0.98 blocks in height, and improvements to their functionality. The Data Pack version has been updated to 85.0, and the Resource Pack version is now at 67.0. Server properties have been streamlined, removing several in favor of game rules, including allow-nether, spawn-monsters, enable-command-block, and pvp. New server properties have been introduced to control the new protocol, including management-server-enabled, management-server-port, management-server-host, and status-heartbeat-interval. The new Minecraft Server Management Protocol is designed for dedicated servers, supporting querying and updating server state, notifying users of state changes, and complying with JSON-RPC 2.0 specifications. New game rules include pvp, allowEnteringNetherUsingPortals, spawnMonsters, and enableCommandBlocks. The text rendering component has been enhanced to support non-character objects within text, with new formats for object types. The chain has been renamed to iron_chain in both Data and Resource Packs. A comprehensive list of bugs has been fixed to enhance gameplay stability and performance. Snapshots are available for Minecraft: Java Edition, and users are advised to back up their worlds before installation.

Microsoft has acknowledged significant performance issues related to the August 2025 security updates, particularly affecting NDI streaming software on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. Users have reported severe lag and stuttering when using streaming applications like OBS. The issues include "severe stuttering, lag, and choppy audio/video" during streaming or transferring audio/video feeds after installing the updates KB5063878 for Windows 11 24H2 and KB5063709 for Windows 10 21H2/22H2. The NDI team confirmed that these updates cause unexpected drops in NDI traffic, specifically affecting RUDP connections. A temporary workaround involves changing the NDI Receive Mode to TCP or UDP. Additionally, Microsoft recognized other issues from the updates, including failures in security updates via WSUS and problems with Windows reset and recovery operations. Feedback has also been solicited regarding failure and data corruption issues affecting SSDs and HDDs on Windows 11 24H2 systems after the updates.

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant bug affecting Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs that may prevent users from successfully resetting or recovering their systems. An out-of-band update, KB5066189, was released to address this issue. Users experiencing failures with the "Reset my PC" feature or the "Fix problems using Windows Update" option are advised to install this update. The reset issue does not affect systems running Windows 11 version 24H2, although some users have reported that SSDs and HDDs may become invisible to the operating system in this version, making data unrecoverable.

The Linux community faces challenges when certain applications are only available on Windows, despite solutions like Wine and virtual machines. A new approach using hardware instead of virtualization has emerged. The author received a Surface Laptop 2 that was non-functional until the keyboard was removed, revealing it was operational. While transitioning Windows installations from VirtualBox to KVM, the author discovered WinApps, a script that allows Windows applications to run on a Linux desktop via a virtual machine. However, this setup caused performance issues due to constant disk activity. The author experimented with connecting WinApps to a physical Windows machine on the network, successfully running Windows software directly on their desktop. The setup required executing an installation script on the Windows machine and making registry changes to enable RDP applications. Minor hurdles included compatibility issues with a dual-monitor setup and user permission bugs. Ultimately, Microsoft Word ran smoothly on the author's KDE desktop, demonstrating the potential for utilizing older computers for occasional tasks.
