Players of Call of Duty: Warzone on Steam are experiencing significantly lower frame rates compared to those on Battle.net and the Xbox PC app, with Steam users struggling to maintain even 80 FPS while others enjoy frame rates between 100 to 200 FPS. The most popular GPU among surveyed users is the RTX 3060, which can deliver over 100 FPS at 1440p in competitive titles. The performance issues may be related to optimization challenges specific to the Steam version of the game, with speculation that a fix could be pending approval from Steam. Ongoing post-launch challenges are common for Call of Duty games, and players may want to consider alternatives to Steam for better performance and ownership rights.

In 2020, multiplayer games experienced a surge in cheating during COVID-19 lockdowns, with titles like Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG, and Destiny 2 struggling against aimbots and wallhacks. Riot Games launched Valorant with its anti-cheat system, Vanguard, which has effectively deterred cheat developers. Vanguard employs a kernel-level driver that detects unauthorized access attempts and has led to a decrease in traditional software cheats, although some cheaters have shifted to hardware solutions like direct memory access (DMA) techniques. Vanguard has also been successful in detecting and blocking suspicious hardware-level DMA attempts. Currently, triggerbots account for about 80 percent of cheats in Valorant. Vanguard was introduced to League of Legends, resulting in over 175,000 account bans. A study from the University of Birmingham indicated that Valorant has the top anti-cheat system, while other games like Call of Duty: Warzone continue to struggle. Riot is exploring collaborations with Microsoft to enhance security and may adjust Vanguard's activation based on Windows 11 features. There are no plans for Linux support due to risks of kernel manipulation. The potential rise of AI-powered cheats presents a new challenge, as AI could replicate human gameplay, complicating anti-cheat efforts.

In 2023, many popular games, including Battlefield and Call of Duty: Warzone, became unplayable due to the shutdown of their online servers, raising concerns about game preservation and consumer rights. The closure of game servers results in the loss of creative work from developers and restricts consumer access to purchased products. Ross Scott, an advocate for game preservation, compares this issue to historical practices of destroying silent films. In response, the European Union is promoting the "European Citizens Initiative," which seeks to gather one million signatures for a law requiring publishers to keep games playable even after server shutdowns. This initiative also aims to include free-to-play games with microtransactions, ensuring players retain access to their purchased assets. The campaign has gained approximately 45,000 signatures within its first day and will remain open for a year.
