Windows update KB5043145 caused some users to experience the blue screen of death instead of performance improvements. Before rolling back updates, users should check for adequate hard drive space, restart the system, attempt to reinstall updates, disconnect non-essential hardware, check for conflicts in Device Manager, ensure antivirus software is not interfering, and verify that the Windows Update service is activated. To troubleshoot update issues, Windows 11 users can run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings, while Windows 10 users can access it through Update & Security. Users can also utilize system restore points to revert to a previous state, use the Reset Windows Update Tool to repair update components, manually install updates from the Microsoft update catalog, or reset and restart update services via command prompt. If all else fails, reinstalling Windows may be necessary, though it could result in data loss.

Microsoft launched the Windows 11 2024 update (24H2) on October 1, which has faced multiple complications. The KB5044384 update, rolled out on October 24 to fix various glitches, aimed to resolve issues such as incorrect file corruption flags, problems with the Disk Cleanup tool, and screen flickering during window switching. However, users have reported installation failures, with the process stalling at 40% or 90%-95%, and common error codes include 0x800f0922 and 0xc015001a. A workaround involves manually downloading the patch from the Microsoft Update Catalog, but even successful installations may lead to ongoing issues like inaccurate Task Manager counts and persistent Alt+Tab problems. Microsoft is implementing a gradual rollout of the update, and users may consider waiting until the next Patch Tuesday on November 12 for potential fixes.

On October 24, Microsoft released the optional KB5044384 patch for Windows 11 to address issues in the 24H2 version. However, users reported installation failures and system crashes, encountering error codes such as 0x800f0922, 0x800736b3, 0xc015001a, 0x800f0991, and 0x80242008. Some users experienced crashes during installation, while others faced problems upon rebooting. The issues appear to be widespread and not limited to specific hardware. Even users who successfully installed the patch reported additional problems, such as Task Manager failing to display running processes. Microsoft is aware of these issues and is working on a resolution. The standard installation route for KB5044384 via Windows Update is currently blocked, but manual installation is available. Users without existing issues may choose to wait for the upcoming Patch Tuesday in early November for a more stable update.

Tyler Owens, a former developer of Halo 5, revealed that plans to port the game's single-player campaign to PC have been abandoned due to unspecified technical challenges. Initially, there was speculation about a potential port following the release of Halo 5: Forge for PC in 2016. However, Owens indicated that Microsoft is reluctant to invest resources into a PC adaptation, suggesting that the complexity of the project contributed to its cancellation. The situation is reminiscent of other titles from the Xbox 360 era that faced similar challenges. Currently, the likelihood of Halo 5: Guardians being released on PC is low, especially since all other Halo titles have made their way to the platform.

A newly identified attack technique poses a risk to fully patched Windows systems by circumventing Microsoft's Driver Signature Enforcement (DSE), potentially enabling operating system downgrade attacks that allow malicious actors to load unsigned kernel drivers. This vulnerability is linked to two privilege escalation flaws in the Windows update mechanism, identified as CVE-2024-21302 and CVE-2024-38202, which can be exploited to revert updated systems to earlier versions with unpatched security weaknesses. A tool called Windows Downdate can hijack the Windows Update process, facilitating undetectable downgrades of critical OS components. The exploit takes advantage of a race condition to replace a verified security catalog file with a malicious version, allowing the loading of an unsigned kernel driver. The DSE bypass can be executed by downgrading the "ci.dll" library, but can be thwarted if Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) is active on the host. Attackers can disable VBS by manipulating registry keys, and the attack fails only if VBS is enabled with a UEFI lock and a "Mandatory" flag, which prevents booting if VBS files are corrupted. Microsoft has addressed the vulnerabilities in August and October 2024.

Microsoft has issued an advisory for a critical vulnerability identified as CVE-2024-43573, affecting over 240 million users, primarily targeting Windows 10 and Windows 11. Users are urged to update their systems by October 29, 2024, to avoid significant security threats. The vulnerability is linked to MSHTML, a component of Internet Explorer, and has been associated with infostealer attacks. The U.S. government recommends federal employees prioritize these updates. Trend Micro indicates that this vulnerability shares characteristics with previously patched issues, necessitating the application of the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Users on older Windows systems are advised to upgrade, as Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 10 in October 2025.
