Windows 11 has introduced a redesigned Start menu with a new categories layout and a revamped Phone Link panel. This update is part of Windows 11 Build 26200.7019 or newer and is being rolled out gradually. Users can enable the new Start menu by downloading Windows 11 KB5067036 or newer, using the ViVeTool package, and executing specific commands in the Command Prompt. The new Start menu features a single-page layout with a collapsible Pinned apps section, a Recommended section that can be hidden, and an All apps section with multiple layout options including Category, Grid, and List. The Category layout organizes apps into niches like Productivity and Tools, although users cannot currently create new categories.

Microsoft claims that laptops and desktop PCs running Windows 11 are "up to 2.3x faster than Windows 10 PCs." Windows 10, the most widely used desktop operating system, powers over 1 billion devices but will stop receiving free updates after October 14, 2025. Users can pay £22 for an additional year of support. The performance comparison is based on Geekbench 6 benchmarks, contrasting new Windows 11 devices with older Windows 10 systems. Between May and June 2025, Windows 11 usage increased by over 4%. Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 Version 25H2 later this year, which will feature a redesigned Start menu and a new CPU throttling feature. Users eligible for a free upgrade can benefit from a smoother installation process. Microsoft offers free security updates to Windows 10 users who subscribe to OneDrive; otherwise, the £22 fee applies. Some users may be hesitant to upgrade due to Windows 10's superior gaming performance in certain scenarios.

A new Drag Tray feature allows users to share files by dragging them to a tray at the top of the screen, simplifying the sharing process. The Start menu can now be customized with a Grid view or a Category view for easier navigation. Windows Search has been updated to allow users to find images by typing a description instead of the file name, including images stored in the cloud. This search enhancement is currently available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel models expected soon.

Microsoft is testing a new ‘Category’ layout for the Start menu in Windows 11, which serves as an alternative to the traditional ‘All apps’ section. This layout features solid-colored squares organized in blocks of four and is part of a broader initiative that includes a grid-based layout. The Category layout has become somewhat functional in the latest Windows 11 Beta channel build, but it remains hidden within the system. The timeline for the rollout of this feature in the upcoming Windows 11 update, version 24H2, is uncertain.
