CraftCells: 3D Cell Biology Reaches Broad Audiences with Minecraft

Zaida Luthey-Schulten and her team at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign developed CraftCells, a project that transforms 3D cell data into interactive objects in Minecraft. This initiative originated from Luthey-Schulten's research on cellular life, where her team created software to segment cells into a grid for studying reactions in specific regions. Inspired by a conference remark about the resemblance of their software to Minecraft's blocky objects, they began converting imaging data into schematic files for the game. Players can download CraftCells from GitHub, allowing them to explore various cellular structures, including bacterial and yeast cells, and experience a rollercoaster ride along a DNA strand. The team plans to collaborate with science educators for feedback on enhancing the platform and aims to incorporate dynamic elements to illustrate cellular processes and expand the variety of cell types available.

What is Signal?

Signal is considered secure but not immune to hacking, and it raises concerns about compliance with open records laws. Government officials are increasingly using encrypted messaging applications, with many having accounts linked to government-issued and personal cell phones. Signal was created by Moxie Marlinspike, who combined two open-source applications, and is overseen by the nonprofit Signal Foundation, which operates without advertisers or investors.

TPD Officer Arrested For Child Porn After MeetMe App Reported Explicit Communications

A digital messenger application, MeetMe Inc., reported serious allegations involving a local police officer to authorities, specifically concerning sexually explicit communications with children. On September 25, 2024, MeetMe initiated a cyber tip to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, providing a chat log that led investigators to Burcham, a patrol officer with the Tuscaloosa Police Department who resigned shortly after. The transcript revealed Burcham soliciting child sexual abuse material, including explicit references to an 11-year-old girl. A subpoena to Charter Communications linked the app's login activity to Burcham's residence in Northport, and a search warrant executed on his cell phone recovered graphic images depicting the sexual abuse of children. Burcham was apprehended by Tuscaloosa Police and is currently held in jail without bond as the investigation continues.
