Facebook parent Meta launches AI assistant app, further competing with OpenAI and Google

Meta Platforms launched a dedicated app for its Meta AI assistant, enhancing user experience by providing personalized responses based on user data from Facebook and Instagram. The app is powered by Llama 4, Meta's latest large language model, designed to compete with AI systems from OpenAI and Google. It will integrate with Meta’s AI glasses and the existing companion app. Meta is also hosting its first AI developer event, LlamaCon, on the same day as the app launch and plans to test a paid subscription model for advanced versions of its AI chatbot in the second quarter. Meta AI, launched in September 2023, serves as a virtual assistant capable of reasoning tasks.

NotebookLM gets Gemini 2.5 Flash as it prepares to launch as a standalone app

NotebookLM has been upgraded to the Gemini 2.5 Flash model, improving its multi-step reasoning capabilities for better responses in chatbot and Q&A modes. The Audio Overviews feature now supports over 50 languages. Google plans to launch NotebookLM as a standalone app at the Google I/O 2025 event, with pre-registration available on the App Store and Google Play Store. A new Output Language setting for Audio Overviews allows users to choose a language different from their default. NotebookLM was initially previewed as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2022.

Consumers make their voices heard as Microsoft’s huge venture flatlines in popularity

In January 2024, Microsoft launched its Copilot assistant, utilizing advanced large language model technology, and introduced various offerings such as Copilot Pro subscription plans and specialized devices. Despite these efforts, Copilot has attracted only 20 million users weekly, which is significantly lower than ChatGPT's 400 million weekly users. This represents just over 1% of the 1.5 billion Windows users globally. Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer, Amy Hood, presented data showing stagnant user engagement for Copilot, raising concerns within the company about the return on its substantial investments in AI technology. Additionally, Microsoft has had to adjust its strategy regarding the Copilot key on keyboards, allowing for customization, and Intel has noted that its AI hardware is not gaining market traction.

Gemini on Android Can Now Answer Queries About Google Photos

Google Photos has integrated with the Gemini app on Android, allowing users to interact with their photo libraries more effectively. This feature, known as Ask Photos, enables users to ask questions about their images and retrieve specific information. The rollout is gradual, and users can access it by navigating to the Gemini app, selecting Google Photos in the Apps menu, and toggling the switch to connect the AI chatbot with their photo library. Users can search for images using natural language prompts and ask questions about the content of the images. Gemini can identify images or albums and allow users to open them in Google Photos or drag and drop images into other applications, though it currently does not support photo editing or album management.

EncryptHub plays dual role as cybercriminal and Windows researcher

EncryptHub, a threat actor linked to intrusions at 618 organizations, reported two Windows zero-day vulnerabilities, CVE-2025-24061 and CVE-2025-24071, to Microsoft, which were resolved in March 2025. The vulnerabilities were reported by an individual named SkorikARI, who has been connected to EncryptHub after the threat actor exposed its login credentials. Researchers at Outpost24 identified this link through multiple pieces of evidence, including exfiltrated password files and a GitHub login associated with SkorikARI. EncryptHub has a history of selling zero-days on hacking forums and has been involved in both freelance development and cybercriminal activities. Despite his expertise, the hacker fell victim to poor security practices, leading to the exposure of personal information and interactions with ChatGPT regarding malware development and self-assessment as a hacker.
