WhatsApp messenger to begin offering usernames

WhatsApp is introducing a feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers by creating unique usernames. This feature aims to enhance privacy and security, enabling users to connect solely by exchanging usernames. Users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their countries, and creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim usernames they use on other Meta platforms. Usernames will be limited to 35 characters, and high-profile individuals will not be able to register their names. Despite these changes, experts express concerns about WhatsApp's overall privacy practices, as the platform collects extensive metadata for marketing purposes. Users' phone numbers will still be required to create an account, and there will be no public username directory. Kunal Shah has been appointed as the new head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart.

Russia’s state-backed messaging app Max blocks regional chats where users tracked gas availability and shared information about lines at filling stations

The Max messenger has blocked chat groups in at least four Russian regions—Ivanovo, Vladimir, Tver, Krasnokamsk, and Chita—where users were tracking gas availability and information about filling station queues. The chat group "Benzin 33" in the Vladimir region gained 15,000 subscribers in three days, while "Benzin Ivanovo" had around 8,000 members, and the Tver chat reached 9,000 subscribers. The blocking in Vladimir was due to a technical violation related to subscriber registration with Roskomnadzor, while the reasons for blockings in other regions are unclear. Russia is facing a fuel crisis exacerbated by Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries, leading to restrictions on gasoline sales in over 20 areas and widespread shortages at gas stations. Additionally, the Federal Antimonopoly Service has banned the sale of gasoline on digital platforms, resulting in blocked listings on e-commerce sites like Ozon and Wildberries.

Telegram’s ad business: How the messaging app makes money

Telegram has established an advertising model that focuses on monetizing public channels, selling ads based on channel topics rather than user identity. Revenue generated from ads is split evenly between Telegram and the channel owner, with no data-mining or behavioral targeting involved. The primary ad format is Sponsored Messages, which appear in public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers and consist of a text block and optional call-to-action button. Public channels are treated as independent units, with 50% of ad revenue going to channel owners, paid in Toncoin. Telegram's ad system has become more accessible by lowering minimum spend requirements. In addition to Sponsored Messages, Telegram is developing Mini Apps funded by its in-app currency, Stars. Minecraft Officially Launches The Chaos Cubed Content Drop

Minecraft has introduced an expansion called Chaos Cubed, featuring a new sulfur cave biome with sulfur springs and survival challenges. Microsoft reveals Teams can’t run well on low-RAM PCs, builds Efficiency Mode after years of bloat

YouTube turns into a messenger: the platform has returned the function of private messages

The app operates as a web wrapper using the WebView2 framework, which leads to inefficient resource consumption compared to native applications. Users across various hardware configurations report freezing, delayed messages, and instability. Microsoft’s Teams app also faces similar performance challenges due to its reliance on the same framework. There is a growing concern about the trend of developers opting for web applications over native ones, driven by a lack of trust in native frameworks. Despite Microsoft's push for native app development through WinUI, there is currently no native version of WhatsApp for Windows, while Meta has developed optimized versions for other platforms.
