Gemini Gems are heading out: Google to replace them with ‘Skills’ in November

Google is transitioning from its Gemini Gems feature to a new functionality called "Skills," effective November 17, 2026. Users can continue to access Gems until the migration occurs. Skills are designed as "reusable custom instructions" that can be stacked and accessed more easily during Gemini chats. Google Messages could soon make voice notes easier to initiate

This change aims to simplify the current two-step process of sending voice notes, which involves tapping the waveform icon and then the microphone icon or long-pressing the waveform icon. While the single-tap feature could enhance accessibility, it raises concerns about accidental activation. Other messaging platforms, like Telegram, require a long press to start a voice note to minimize unintentional recordings. WhatsApp for Android has already implemented a similar single-tap feature. There is hope that Google will introduce a toggle in the settings menu to allow users to choose between the new single-tap method and the traditional approach.

First look: Google Messages could soon get a faster way to search within chats

Russia’s state-backed messaging app Max can secretly change how it surveils individual users, researchers at InterSecLab find

The Max messenger, developed by VK, has significant user tracking capabilities. WhatsApp Plus lets you customise emoji reactions on Android

Google Messages is preparing its biggest search overhaul yet

Google Messages is testing a redesign of its search functionality to improve user experience. I tried the Gemini app for Windows. It wasted my time

The Gemini app for Windows allows users to interact with a generative content LLM chatbot, but non-Google account users can only use the chatbot. Signing in with a Google account provides access to stored chats, dedicated tabs for images and videos, and a daily brief summarizing essential emails for Workspace account users. Unlike ChatGPT’s Windows application, Gemini does not allow direct connection to desktop or services like Slack for task performance. The app includes a “Scheduled Actions” section for Google’s suggestions and a “Personal Intelligence” tab to manage user interaction memory. There is also an “Import memory to Gemini” tab for transferring information from other LLMs. The app offers customization options but has limitations compared to competitors.
