Over Half of Gen Z have Already Faced a Cyberattack

Generation Z spends 57% of their time online, primarily using smartphones (67% as their main device), and 59% feel comfortable in the digital realm. However, only 28% consider their digital skills advanced, and just 27% use antivirus software on their mobile devices. More than half (52%) have experienced attacks on their devices or accounts, with 17% reporting compromised social media accounts and 12% losing access to gaming accounts. Despite valuing personal documents and photos, only 28% back up important data from their smartphones. Kaspersky has launched an interactive online game, “Case 404,” to raise cybersecurity awareness among Gen Z. The study involved 7,200 respondents across 18 countries and was conducted by Kaspersky’s market research center in 2026.

Hirudo Android malware replaces banking apps to evade security checks

Researchers have identified a new Android malware called Hirudo, which steals bank account credentials by replacing legitimate banking applications with modified versions that disable security checks. Hirudo impersonates at least seven banks in Indonesia and targets financial institutions in China, India, Mexico, Morocco, and Thailand. It is delivered through seemingly legitimate applications related to shopping, adult content, or short drama, which prompt users to grant permissions, including Accessibility services. Once installed, Hirudo uninstalls the genuine banking app, downloads a patched version, and uses Accessibility permissions to complete the installation. The malicious app retains nearly all of the original app's code but integrates a hooking engine based on open-source frameworks YAHFA and Dobby, employing evasion tactics such as substituting signing certificates, concealing Accessibility services, disabling screenshot protection, and altering key-attestation certificates. Despite its advanced capabilities, Hirudo has limitations, including a publicly leaked attestation keybox and compromised certificates flagged by Google. Once operational, it can extract sensitive information, stream the screen, access cameras, and use fake checkout pages to collect payment PINs while misleading victims with fabricated success messages. Hirudo represents an escalation in Android banking malware tactics, focusing on the security mechanisms of banking applications. Researchers recommend that banks enhance security measures and that Android users keep devices updated, avoid unofficial APK files, and conduct regular Play Protect scans.

GLM’s 23 Windows Bug Finds Are Z.ai Building a Security Research Resume

Reports indicate that NIST's AI safety division has flagged GLM-5.3 due to concerns about its cyber capabilities, particularly regarding the potential for modified versions to reduce safety features. India Orders Apple to Pull Jack Dorsey’s Offline Messaging App Bitchat

Apple has removed the decentralized messaging application Bitchat, developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, from its App Store in India following a directive from the Indian federal government under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, citing national security. The notice from Apple's App Review team, shared by Dorsey on October 3, 2026, did not specify the illegal content. The app remains available in other regions, but users in India will lose access to TestFlight testing and public beta links. This action follows a previous request made on July 23, 2026, by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to GitHub to disable access to three Bitchat repositories, invoking Section 79(3)(b) and Rule 3(1)(d). The Internet Freedom Foundation has contested the July order, claiming authorities bypassed established blocking frameworks. Bitchat, introduced as open-source software in July 2025, allows local Bluetooth mesh communication and internet messaging without relying on a central server, raising concerns for law enforcement. The timing of the restrictions coincided with youth-led protests in India, which led to a significant increase in Bitchat downloads, accounting for about 85% of the app's global downloads during a protest period from July 17-23. Despite the removal, existing installations can still communicate locally without needing app store access. Previously, in May 2023, India invoked Section 69A against other messaging applications, and China also mandated Bitchat's removal in April 2026 for similar reasons. Digital rights advocates argue the government's justification for the ban is concerning as it sets a precedent for restricting software based on technical capabilities.

The most profitable free-to-play games on consoles and PCs are gradually losing market share, study shows

Newzoo's study on free-to-play games in 2025 reveals that revenue from this segment is shifting, with the top five grossing titles' share of total console revenue decreasing from 79% in 2021 to 72% in 2025, and from 68% to 65% on PC. Players spent approximately 30 billion hours on free-to-play games in the previous year, a decline of 2.9% from 2021. Roblox's playtime has more than doubled to nearly 10 billion hours, increasing its share from 3.3% to 7.9%. While free-to-play playtime on PC has grown, console playtime has declined. The number of gacha games has increased from three in 2021 to 17 in 2025, leading to a 92% rise in playtime on PC. Tesla Optimus Gen 3 design possibly revealed in Android app
