Surfshark has updated its antivirus software with a new interface that improves user experience and compatibility with ARM hardware. The update aims to enhance accessibility and transparency in its cybersecurity suite, Surfshark One, which combines VPN, antivirus, private search engine, and data breach monitoring services. Key features of the revamped antivirus include a detailed protection history, easy access to additional features, and an improved repair function. Core functionalities like webcam protection and customizable security settings remain unchanged, and the antivirus uses the Avira SDK as its engine. The update addresses previous limitations for Windows ARM users, responding to increased demand for ARM support.

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, affecting approximately 400 million PCs that cannot upgrade to Windows 11. The Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) warns this could lead to a significant increase in discarded computers. Microsoft is offering Extended Support Updates (ESU) but critics view these as temporary solutions. Companies like HP and Dell report that about half of the global PC market still relies on Windows 10, leading to accusations of planned obsolescence. Back Market is addressing this issue by offering refurbished laptops pre-installed with Google’s Chrome OS Flex, although only 50 units are available. They emphasize the environmental impact of planned obsolescence and suggest users consider alternative operating systems or participate in repair communities to extend the lifespan of their devices.

Valve will discontinue support for Windows 10 32-bit systems starting January 1, 2026. Users on 32-bit versions are encouraged to transition to 64-bit systems to maintain access to Steam's features and updates. After the cutoff date, Steam clients on 32-bit systems will not receive updates, including security updates and technical support. Currently, only 0.01 percent of systems use Windows 10 32-bit, according to Valve's Steam Hardware Survey. Future versions of Steam will only operate on 64-bit Windows. This announcement coincides with Microsoft's end of support for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 on October 14. Valve advises users to upgrade to enhance security and improve their gaming experience.

Databases require robust protection against unauthorized access, primarily managed through Access Control Lists (ACL) using commands like GRANT and REVOKE. Challenges arise when attackers gain direct access to database files, especially if backups are stored insecurely or if databases are hosted in the cloud. Encrypting backups is common but can be cumbersome, particularly with large data volumes. If attackers access the file system, they may bypass SQL access altogether. Client-side encoding, such as using PostgreSQL's pgcrypto, protects sensitive data by encoding it before storage, but it faces challenges like key management, lack of SQL filtering, and the need for query rewrites. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows SQL operations to function normally while keeping data unreadable on disk. Various TDE implementations exist, including Percona's initial TDE, which faced issues with unprotected indexes and performance slowdowns. Cybertec and EnterpriseDB encrypt entire clusters, simplifying the process but impacting performance and complicating technical support. Selective encryption approaches from Pangolin and Fujitsu allow for protecting specific tables, while Percona's recent TDE implementation also follows this model but lacks support for non-standard Table Access Methods (TAMs). Postgres Pro Enterprise TDE addresses key rotation and time-based analysis protection by storing a key index for each table page and using random initialization vectors and Message Authentication Codes for enhanced security. Future developments aim to improve TDE capabilities, including protecting compressed tablespaces and refining WAL data encryption.

Microsoft addressed 80 vulnerabilities in its software, with eight classified as Critical and 72 as Important. None of these vulnerabilities have been exploited as zero-day threats. The vulnerabilities include 38 related to privilege escalation, 22 concerning remote code execution, 14 linked to information disclosure, and three associated with denial-of-service attacks. Notable vulnerabilities include CVE-2025-55234 (CVSS score: 8.8), which involves privilege escalation in Windows SMB, and CVE-2025-54914 (CVSS score: 10.0), a critical flaw affecting Azure Networking. Other significant vulnerabilities include CVE-2025-55232 (CVSS score: 9.8) in Microsoft HPC Pack and CVE-2025-54918 (CVSS score: 8.8) affecting Windows NTLM. Two additional privilege escalation vulnerabilities in Windows BitLocker were also identified. Microsoft recommends enabling TPM+PIN for BitLocker security and implementing the REVISE mitigation to prevent downgrade attacks. Other vendors, including Adobe, Cisco, and IBM, have also released security patches recently.

Windows 10 will reach its end-of-life on October 14, 2025, and many users are hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11 due to design flaws and high system requirements. Alternatives like Tiny11, which creates a lightweight version of Windows 11 for older PCs, are emerging. Tiny11 recently updated to support Windows 11 version 25H2, removing certain Microsoft applications. Microsoft is set to roll out Windows 11 version 25H2 without new features. Speculation about a potential Windows 12 continues, with concept designer Abdi presenting a vision for "Brilliant Windows 12," which includes features like "Collectzone" for wallpaper organization and enhanced customization options. Microsoft’s CVP hinted at a future operating system that would leverage AI for a more integrated experience. The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will provide continued security support for Windows 10 users post-cutoff, but critics argue it does not meet the needs of the estimated 400 million PCs that cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft is projected to earn over a billion from the ESU program in the first year after Windows 10's end-of-life.
