We finally know how Windows XP’s infamous FCKGW product key ended up everywhere

Windows XP was released in two versions: Retail for individual consumers and Volume for Microsoft's partners and OEMs. The product key FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8 became widely recognized due to a potential leak by an insider at a major OEM, which was then spread by the pirate group Devils0wn. The Volume version's activation system required a unique key, but the FCKGW key was incompatible with the standard installation CD. To verify the legitimacy of Volume discs, the activation system searched for a secret 10MB binary blob exclusive to the Volume media. Microsoft blacklisted the FCKGW key with Service Pack 1 and implemented further security measures with Service Pack 2, restricting access to certain updates. Contrary to prior beliefs, the key's functionality was not due to a simple key generation algorithm but was designed by skilled engineers.

Microsoft fixes bug behind ‘Defender Antivirus is turned off’ alerts

Microsoft resolved an issue that caused misleading alerts indicating that Defender Antivirus was disabled after recent updates. This fix was confirmed in an update to the Windows release health dashboard and was implemented in the Microsoft Defender Antivirus update (version 4.18.26080.4) rolled out on September 17. The bug, acknowledged by Microsoft in late August, affected users in the Release Preview Channel of the Windows Insider program since at least June and impacted all supported versions of Windows clients and servers. Users received erroneous notifications in the Windows Security app prompting them to activate Microsoft Defender Antivirus, despite it functioning correctly. Misleading alerts could appear upon Windows startup and intermittently thereafter, even when notification settings were disabled.

Android apps can now check security patches down to individual device components

The new AndroidX Security State libraries, with stable releases of Security State v1.1.0 and Security State Provider v1.0.0, allow developers to evaluate the security status of individual device components. They provide three levels of security patch information: Device Security Patch Level (DSPL), Published Security Patch Level (PSPL), and Available Security Patch Level (ASPL). These libraries enable checks on critical components of the Android operating system, including system modules and the Linux kernel, which are represented by version numbers rather than monthly patch dates. Applications that prioritize security can utilize this detailed patch information to assess vulnerabilities, particularly those tracked as Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs). The libraries also integrate with the Open Source Vulnerabilities (OSV) database for access to Android Security Bulletin data and device-specific vulnerability reports. Additionally, Android 17 allows manufacturers to declare individual security fixes beyond the stated security patch level, and Google is working with manufacturers to transition their OTA update clients to this new standardized system.

Comma Compliance Open-Sources the Android App That Archives Employee Text Messages

Comma Compliance released the source code for its Android capture component on September 10, 2026, allowing corporate IT and security teams to inspect the software that captures employee text messages for compliance archiving. The source code is available on GitHub under the MIT license. The capture mechanism reads messages stored in the phone's default messaging app, encrypts them, and sends them to the customer's Comma backend without intercepting messages in transit. Four REVSTEALER-Linked Modules Disable Windows Update and Defender to Run a Crypto Miner

Elastic Security Labs has identified four previously undocumented programs associated with REVSTEALER, a Windows information stealer that persists on infected machines after self-deletion. The programs are ProManager, WinUpdate, SoftManager, and LockAppHost, each with distinct functionalities. ProManager steals wallet files and logs passwords, WinUpdate monitors the clipboard for cryptocurrency addresses, SoftManager acts as a reverse proxy, and LockAppHost executes a cryptocurrency miner after disabling Windows Update and Microsoft Defender. REVSTEALER has been marketed as a commercial infostealer since February 2026, exfiltrating sensitive data such as browser passwords, cookies, and cryptocurrency wallet information. It deletes itself after reporting its activities but leaves the four programs installed for persistence. These programs share build tradecraft with REVSTEALER, including the use of identical packers and runtime function resolutions. REVSTEALER primarily spreads through game-cheat lures and disguises itself as pirated software. It employs evasion techniques to resist analysis, including checking for sandbox environments and using indirect system calls. Users are advised to avoid unofficial software and to follow specific steps if infected, such as re-enabling Windows Update services and changing passwords. Indicators of compromise include SHA-256 hashes for REVSTEALER and its associated programs, as well as domains linked to their command and control servers.

Firefox has added official support for GeForce NOW on Windows

Microsoft issues security updates every second Tuesday of the month, known as Patch Tuesday, which are cumulative, meaning the latest updates include all previous fixes. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issues warnings about vulnerabilities, and Microsoft maintains a security portal for documentation of these issues. Users on unsupported versions, like Windows 10 without Extended Security Updates (ESU), are at increased risk. In addition to security updates, Windows receives an annual feature update and occasional optional non-security updates that introduce new features and enhancements. An example is the Windows 11 February 2026 preview update, which added new features and improvements.
