EDB Supports MERMAID’s Global Open Source Initiative to Confront Ongoing Coral Reef Crisis

The open-source application MERMAID, developed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), is enhancing its capabilities for monitoring coral reef health with sponsorship from EnterpriseDB (EDB). The initiative aims to use advanced technologies like Postgres and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the identification and monitoring of coral reefs, with a goal of conserving climate-resilient reefs by 2030. MERMAID facilitates the collection and management of real-time data on coral reef ecosystems, and EDB’s support will allow it to incorporate AI algorithms for analyzing large datasets and predicting bleaching events. Coral reefs, which support about 25% of marine life, are under threat from climate change, with around 54% experiencing bleaching-level heat stress. Since its inception in 2018, MERMAID has involved over 2,000 scientists from 40 countries, resulting in more than 50,000 transects from 5,000 coral reef sites globally. The integration of PostgreSQL has improved data collection efficiency by three to five times compared to traditional methods.
