Nothing OS 5.0 is rolling out, but not every phone gets it yet

Nothing OS 5.0 has begun rolling out for the Nothing Phone (3), built on Android 17. The update includes over 80 changes in design, performance, and AI features. Key enhancements involve a redesigned Home Screen with transparent widgets and an adaptive color scheme, a new Micrographics clock face on the Lock Screen, improved organization through Smart Collections, and faster transcription with Essential Voice. Users can also create AI-powered apps without coding through the Essential Apps Builder, which will be gradually introduced. Performance improvements include better touch response and resource management. Android 17 adds separate Notifications and Quick Settings panels, cross-platform Quick Share, enhanced privacy controls, and a redesigned Recents screen. The rollout will extend to the Phone (4a) and Phone (3a) series in November, with other compatible models to follow.

Windows 11 26H2 Delivers 40% Faster Apps for 16 GB Systems; 8 GB Machines Left Behind

Windows 11 version 26H2 was released on September 29, 2026, featuring performance enhancements for users with 16 GB or more of RAM, including a reduction in idle memory consumption by 2–3 GB and a 40% acceleration in application and system interface launches. The update package is 174 kilobytes and activates previously dormant features, resetting the support lifecycle for Windows 11 Home and Pro until October 2028. The Low Latency Profile is a key feature that boosts CPU clock speed temporarily during application launches, resulting in faster interactions, with independent tests showing a 70% improvement in opening the Start menu. Users with 16 GB or more of RAM have reported idle RAM dropping from over 10 GB to around 7 GB after the update. However, users with 8 GB of RAM have experienced minimal improvements and high idle memory utilization. Microsoft is committed to optimizing Windows for 8 GB machines, but early reports suggest limited gains from 26H2.

Google Pixels could get an all-new way to customize lock screens, for better or for worse

A new lock screen customization page has been discovered in the Wallpaper & Style app on Pixel devices, indicating potential enhancements for users. This page includes buttons for adjusting wallpapers, colors, clock display, widgets, and a new category called “media,” which may integrate media playback functionalities. The current customization options allow users to modify the lock screen and home screen aesthetics, including clock styles, shortcuts, and notifications. The rollout of the Android 17 QPR3 beta raises questions about whether this new interface will improve user experience compared to the existing customization menu. Features revealed through APK teardowns are not guaranteed to appear in the final public release.

Your old phone isn’t useless: 4 smart ways to get more life out of it

Phone upgrades often lead to replacing devices every couple of years, but old phones still hold value. Users typically choose to deal with their old phones in the following ways: 26% sell or trade it in, 26% hand it down to family or friends, 42% turn it into a dedicated gadget, and 5% let it sit in a drawer. Old phones can be kept as second devices for personal and work separation, used as an Android Auto display, or serve as a backup phone for emergencies. They can also be repurposed into gadgets like dash cams, security cameras, music players, e-readers, universal remotes, or PC companions. Additionally, they can replace webcams, act as second screens, or provide portable storage. If repurposing isn’t appealing, selling the phone is a practical option, with a strong market for used phones on platforms like SellCell, Swappa, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Trading it in may yield better benefits, especially with retailer promotions, and donating it to charity is another option.

Microsoft Releases the Windows 11 2026 Update, Version 26H2, as a Small Enablement Package

Microsoft has rolled out the Windows 11 2026 Update (version 26H2) for eligible devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2. The update is being implemented as a controlled feature rollout and is delivered as an enablement package, activating features already integrated into the system. Versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a unified servicing branch and codebase, making the installation process similar to a standard monthly cumulative update. Windows 11 26H2 consolidates various improvements, security enhancements, and fixes from version 25H2, with some features previously disabled in 25H2 now enabled by default. Installing 26H2 resets the support clock, providing 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. Users can manually request the update through Windows Update settings. Organizations can deploy version 26H2 using Windows Autopatch and other management tools, with a recommendation for targeted deployment initially. Devices that shipped with Windows 11 version 26H1 cannot upgrade to 26H2 due to differences in the Windows core. Microsoft may also implement safeguard holds on devices with known compatibility issues, delaying the update until resolved.
