Windows 11’s built-in weather app hogs more than 1.2 gigabytes of RAM just to tell the forecast — memory-sucking web wrapper filled with ads masquerades as an actual application

Microsoft is addressing issues related to user dissatisfaction with its Windows operating system, which has faced criticism for lack of optimization, excessive bloat, and intrusive advertisements. The built-in weather application, MSN Weather, exemplifies these problems, consuming up to 1.2GB of RAM while idling and displaying ads despite being part of a paid OS. In contrast, Apple's macOS weather app uses about 250MB of memory and operates ad-free. MSN Weather functions as a web wrapper, utilizing eight Chromium-based subprocesses, which raises concerns about its efficiency. Microsoft plans to update all native Windows applications to the Win32 standard for better optimization, but it is unclear if this will also apply to MSN-branded services like MSN Weather. Users have shown a preference for mobile devices over the weather widget introduced in Windows 11.

Samsung Driving Insights app could be the backseat driver no one asked for

A newly leaked build of Samsung's One UI 9 reveals an app called Driving Insights, which uses artificial intelligence to provide personalized feedback on driving habits. The app analyzes driving behaviors through location tracking and AI algorithms, generating weekly summaries for users. It assesses aspects such as speed and braking intensity, and activates when a phone connects to a vehicle's Bluetooth. Users can filter reports by time and distance, receiving feedback ranging from commendations to constructive advice. The app will also monitor rapid acceleration and sharp turns. Driving Insights aims to enhance driving practices, but raises concerns about the reliability of AI-generated advice in promoting safe driving.

New Marathon update takes a leaf out of Arc Raiders’ book and encourages you to play nice

A recent update to Marathon has introduced the 'CARRI' system, which stands for the "CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative," encouraging cooperative gameplay among players. This system rewards both solo players and teams for completing contract objectives and successfully exfiltrating together. Players can earn CyberAcme Commendations, which can be spent in the CARRI Armory for various rewards, including weapons and salvage crates. Solo players can earn commendations by completing individual objectives and can receive extra commendations when extracting with others. A new 'toggle to open' setting for proximity chat and an end-of-run feature called 'Stay Together' promote friendly interactions. The update also includes a 'Mercy Kit' for reviving downed players from other teams and introduces eleven new Deluxe Unique weapons, balance changes, and adjustments to gameplay mechanics, such as railgun charging and extraction timers. The update is now live.
