Microsoft says Windows September updates break SMBv1 shares

Microsoft has acknowledged that the September 2025 Windows security updates are causing connection difficulties with Server Message Block (SMB) v1 shares across various platforms, including Windows 11 versions 24H2, 23H2, and 22H2, and Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2, as well as Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022. The issue occurs when connecting to SMBv1 shares via the NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocol after installing the September 2025 update or later. Microsoft is working on a resolution and has provided a temporary workaround that involves enabling traffic on TCP port 445. SMBv1 has been largely phased out and officially deprecated since 2014, with Microsoft urging system administrators to eliminate support for it due to security vulnerabilities, especially after the 2017 leak of NSA exploits that targeted SMBv1.

This malware targets macOS and Windows users and has been active for about four months. The hackers behind Realst operate under the fake company name "Meetio" and have used various aliases. They employ social engineering tactics, often contacting victims through platforms like Telegram, presenting fraudulent business opportunities, and leading them to download the malware from a deceptive website. Once installed, Realst scans for sensitive information, organizes it, and sends it to a remote server. It can extract credentials from applications like Telegram and web browsers. To protect against such malware, users are advised to verify software sources, be cautious of unexpected contacts, enable two-factor authentication, use strong passwords, keep software updated, and consider personal data removal services.

Microsoft will still let Windows 11 users send a fax, should they ever want that

Microsoft resolved a connectivity issue affecting eSCL devices, including USB-connected scanners and fax machines, for users who upgraded to Windows 11, version 24H2. A compatibility hold was implemented to prevent complications, which was first reported on November 22. On December 10, Microsoft announced that the hold (ID 54762729) would be lifted, allowing users to upgrade without concerns, with some devices receiving the update within 48 hours. As of now, Windows 11 accounts for approximately 34.9% of all Windows installations, while Windows 10 holds a 61.8% share.
