Windows 11 ruined my old laptop, but this lightweight Linux distro brought it back to life

The author experienced significant performance issues with their six-year-old Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 11, which had only 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i3-8145U. They decided to install Zorin OS Lite, which led to improved boot times, faster application launches, and lower RAM usage. The Speedometer score improved from 5.68 on Windows 11 to 12.0 on Zorin OS Lite. The laptop has been repurposed for travel, writing, and casual use, and the author is now more open to exploring Linux further.

CVE-2024-55638: Highly Critical Drupal Core Vulnerability Threatens PostgreSQL Sites with Remote Code Execution (RCE)

A critical vulnerability, CVE-2024-55638, has been identified in Drupal Core, affecting installations using PostgreSQL as their backend database. This vulnerability involves PHP Object Injection, which can lead to full Remote Code Execution (RCE) when combined with another deserialization flaw. The vulnerability is particularly relevant for sites using PostgreSQL, and organizations are urged to upgrade to the patched versions and audit their code for unsafe unserialize() usage. Currently, there are no confirmed reports of exploitation in the wild, but the risk remains high due to insecure deserialization bugs in third-party modules. Star Wars: The Old Republic’s original director hadn’t played a single MMO before launching its development studio: ‘How the hell did they trust me with this much money?’

James Ohlen, a veteran of BioWare, oversaw the development of the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is currently managed by Broadsword. He had never played an MMO before taking on the project. Ohlen expressed regrets about the game's initial launch, which included 200 hours of content across eight origin stories, suggesting a more focused experience of around 60 hours would have improved quality. He noted that the vast amount of content led to a decline in quality, stating that creativity was compromised. Ohlen proposed a relaunch of the game as Star Wars: The New Republic, which was supported by EA executive Patrick Söderlund but ultimately rejected by EA's board due to concerns over the initial costly launch. By 2019, The Old Republic had generated nearly billion in revenue. In 2019, Ohlen co-founded Archetype Entertainment, but he left the studio in December 2025 for personal health reasons.
