Manufacturers are increasingly integrating IT systems with operational technology (OT), leading to heightened cyber threats such as ransomware, supply chain breaches, and attacks from nation-state actors. To enhance cyber resilience, it is crucial to segment IT and OT networks to prevent breaches on the IT side from affecting critical OT systems. Effective segmentation involves placing OT systems behind firewalls, restricting protocols, and using unidirectional gateways. Many manufacturing plants struggle with aging and undocumented devices, making security and monitoring challenging. Asset visibility tools can help map connected devices, enabling better inventory management and risk assessment. Attackers often use "living-off-the-land" techniques to navigate networks undetected, necessitating defenses that include behavioral analytics and application whitelisting. Incident response plans tailored for OT environments are essential, as production interruptions can have severe consequences. These plans should include scenarios like ransomware attacks and require regular testing and backups. For legacy systems that cannot be patched, isolation and monitoring are critical, along with virtual patching to block known exploits. Weak credentials pose a significant risk, so implementing role-based access control and multi-factor authentication is necessary. Security monitoring tools like SIEM and XDR should be used to consolidate data from IT and OT environments, providing alerts for potential attacks. Overall, cyber resilience in manufacturing focuses on minimizing risks and ensuring recovery without disrupting operations.

63% of respondents in a recent poll prefer Google’s Pixel UI over Samsung’s One UI, which received 37% support. Users favor Google’s camera app for its intuitive design and image processing capabilities, finding it easier for everyday photography compared to Samsung’s more complex camera app. Google’s Pixel UI is appreciated for its simplicity, offering a single app for each function, while Samsung’s devices often come with multiple pre-loaded applications, leading to a cluttered interface. Users find Samsung’s One UI settings overwhelming, whereas Pixel UI provides a clean layout for quick adjustments. Unique features like Now Playing and Call Screen on Pixel devices enhance user experience, and Google’s speed in rolling out software updates is faster and more reliable than Samsung’s, contributing to user trust in the Pixel ecosystem.

All software is susceptible to security vulnerabilities, but open-source solutions can enhance defenses against cyber threats, according to Jeremy Wilson, CTO for the North America public sector at EDB. He noted that the global community continuously inspects open-source code, leading to fewer issues and quicker resolutions. EDB's PostgreSQL database product is designed for online transaction systems, data warehousing, and analytics, incorporating security enhancements and performance improvements. EDB synchronizes its release cycles with the open-source community and aims to meet regulatory requirements, including obtaining FedRAMP High certification. EDB collaborates with Red Hat to implement security controls and has integrated features like transparent data encryption and APIs to support zero trust cybersecurity initiatives. Wilson acknowledged challenges agencies face when transitioning to open-source solutions, including legacy systems and regulatory compliance hurdles. EDB aims to provide a turnkey enterprise database that simplifies the migration of applications, ensuring compliance with FIPS 140-3 and DISA STIGs.
